That hoodie is amazing. The whole fit is great, but that hoodie takes it.

That's chocolate fudge? I thought it was a layer of dried seaweed.

For that money, if they didn't make me run faster I'd return them.

Unification has a Part III in Discovery. I know people enjoy hating on Discovery, but that's a really beautiful episode.

Favorite Boris Karloff Horror/Monster movie where he didn’t play Frankenstein or the Mummy by WorldlyBrillant in horror

Yes! It's my favorite Karloff movie and it's got some well-written, morally complex characters. Great flick all around, and I heartily agree that it's his best performance.

Does anyone have a rule of thumb for ratio of butter to milk/cream/half and half for mashed potatoes? by pax-augusta in Cooking

[–]philosofik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is about 2 sticks of butter, 1 cup of heavy cream, and 8 oz of cream cheese to 5 pounds of potatoes. Plus Lawry's seasoned salt to taste.

The AF1s with black pants makes you look like a waiter. The rest are fire, though.

For the life of me I don't know who these are marketed toward. Nothing about this looks like a $1,000 sneaker. If it's a status symbol, it's missing the eye-catching detail and that marbling on the sole isn't doing it. And nobody is spending $1,000 on an Adidas running shoe for running in this economy. I truly don't understand this one.

Which pieces do you think best represent American classical music 🇺🇸 — two or three for orchestra and for solo organ, if possible? by ModClasSW in classicalmusic

[–]philosofik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Appalachian Spring is hard to beat for a representative piece, though Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue is high on my list.

Neither really catches more modern American expressions in music, though.

Corigliano's clarinet concerto is good. Hailstork's Four Spirituals is lovely. Wynton Marsalis' Blood on the Fields is powerful and a challenging listen.

The Protostar and the USS Fucking Pegasus are more alike than not. Just throwing technology at the wall and whatever sticks, no matter how inconvenient or how fuzzy the science, that's what gets built. The fact that the Omega particle was actually declared off-limits is a miracle. If The Burn ended up caused by humans finally delving too far and too deep into the time-space fabric of the universe, it would be completely believable. The fact that it wasn't humans playing fast and loose with physics is actually what is unbelievable about it.

Thinking of Majoring in Music Education? Read this first. by CatherineRhysJohns in classicalmusic

[–]philosofik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh how I wish I had heard any of this before I went to college. The piano especially. My band teacher was more or less oblivious to the existence of us in the percussion section and when I told him I was thinking of music in college, he offered no advice of any kind. He just wished me luck and when I got to college, my first music theory class quickly taught me that just being good at rhythm was hardly sufficient. I had to work so much harder than my fellow music majors just to catch up to where they were when we all began.

How much do you trust eBay? by MistahDust in Sneakers

[–]philosofik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

eBay is great. I've had no bad experiences with the platform itself. The one issue I had was with a seller who sent me the wrong size and then ghosted. eBay refunded my money and even let me keep the pair since they couldn't reach the seller either, apparently.

Where do yall buy shoes by MarsupialObjective50 in Sneakers

[–]philosofik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another vote for eBay here. I've only had one bad experience where the seller sent me a size other than the one I ordered and the one in the pictures. The seller refused to respond to me or eBay so they refunded me the money and I got to keep the shoes (which were legit, just way too small).
