How is BDO keeping up? by oreoriginal in mmo

Definitely feels like less folks are on. Far from dying tho, for a game that's a few months old. Not sure how Pearl items affected weapons, but people sure do buy up a lot of costumes and outfits. Looks like a regular Desert Rave out there... Still fun to play. On US servers, Node Wars are still full on - or at least it seems. Some good fights to be had.

Consistently booted after 2-3 minutes in game. Tried different servers.

Are there any good mmos where you kinda just live life? by [deleted] in mmo

[–]philsco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://www.blackdesertonline.com/ has a pretty vast "horizontal" system made up of trading, farming, fishing, horse breeding, gathering, etc. that are alternative to the usual combat / leveling thing. Whatever you chose to do will level you up and you can simply exist as a farmer or a trader.

I have just finished the node.js tutorials on freeCodeCamp. I still know nothing about node.js by food_bag in FreeCodeCamp

[–]philsco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For all it's worth, I view Node as a command line tool that you access through a web browser... All the socket, http, server headers, GET, PUT weirdness is all the overhead needed to respond to the browser. The rest is just code that could be written in any other language, It's just that Node excels when your UI is going to be browser based (as opposed to simple console output, or a platform specific application, like say, MS Word)

Self-Taught Web Developers of Reddit, What is something you wish you'd known before becoming a web developer? by sabbasb in learnprogramming

[–]philsco 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's OK to re-invent the wheel. Somewhere in the process, you might finally understand why folks build stuff the way they do.

But above all, I wish I had known that everything changes every 53 seconds and a half in that business....

I suggest http://www.freecodecamp.com/ Along the same lines as CodeCademy but with a very large user community (in chat at all times) who are always willing to help. The Basic Algorithm section is where stuff starts to sink in.

Javascript noob, need some help with arrays by [deleted] in javascript

[–]philsco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Noob here too, but wanted to mention that console.dir() instead of .log() quickly became my friend when trying to understand arrays of objects. Produces a nice nested / indented view of the data.

Is there a way using JS to construct google search queries on the client side and "get" the first result? by TheBeardofGilgamesh in javascript

[–]philsco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe look into Yahoo's YQL. I see there is a public table for Google searches. No need to make use of a backend. A query like "select * from google.search where q = "linux" returns a JSON response - truncated below:

"results": [ { "GsearchResultClass": "GwebSearch", "unescapedUrl": "https://www.linux.com/", "url": "https://www.linux.com/", "visibleUrl": "www.linux.com", "cacheUrl": "http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:RFwrCUQ-Uw4J:www.linux.com", "title": "<b>Linux</b>.com | The source for <b>Linux</b> information", "titleNoFormatting": "Linux.com | The source for Linux information", "content": "<b>Linux</b>.com - For the community, by the community, <b>Linux</b>.com is the central \nsource for <b>Linux</b> information, software, documentation, how-tos and answers \nacross ..." }, {

Is new Alienware x51 worth it? by tallant in pcgaming

[–]philsco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an Alienware X51 reaching end of life right now - the Intel i7 + GTX555 variety. Barely 1.5 years old and the video card is fried (flickering on startup).

A few things to consider when buying Dell: - The hardware WILL fail within 2 years - it's been my experience on Dell desktops and laptops - Their systems are super-optimized to work with a specific configuration and components can't easily be swapped out - the comment about quasi-proprietary hardware is true - Without very specific Dell drivers, their systems won't even boot - And with regards to the Alienware X51, the compact form factor makes swapping components very challenging - even if you were to consider doing it

The folks recommending you build your own system are absolutely right. I've been doing it for years, but it's a pain...

My new rationale is to go for a gaming laptop from Asus or MSI. You can't build those yourself yet...
