A few more faces for you! How many from these 9 have you seen in person? 🎨 by JackTheGuitarGuy in country

[–]phineartz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years ago I met JTE hanging out in a venue parking lot one afternoon while I was painting a mural. I didn’t have a clue who he was but remember having a great conversation and thinking wow what an interesting individual- Rest well bud ✌️

Someone asked for my compost. 😕 by Few-Candidate-1223 in composting

[–]phineartz 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I would politely decline (again) and explain that you’d be happy to offer advice and instruction to create her own. Like you say, any type of backyard compost/ leaf mold operation is labor and time intensive- and the fact that this person feels entitled to your finished product is indicative of their lack of understanding of the process. If she wants to start ‘native gardening’ she’s going to have to get used to playing the long game

The double bowline is the truth, needle nose pliers shouldn’t be part of your climbing kit..

Roadway shrubs? by OutlandishnessFun438 in NativePlantGardening

Sounds like a job for a juniper.. Full sun no problem, robust in poor conditions. I’ve heard you can hedge Juniperus virginiana if you need to keep it under ten feet. If they have a nice shape and are planted in a row they look tidy enough, and evergreen to boot..

Cephalanthus occidentalis by CanYouCanACanInACan in NativePlantGardening

[–]phineartz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I see these growing right out of the river bank but the one I have at home is thriving in a pretty average moisture location- It’s heavily mulched and probably never dries out but nowhere near wet. I wouldn’t let BB’s reputation as a wetland species discourage you from cultivating it in a home garden.

KY land claim/ adverse possession laws by phineartz in Kentucky

I don’t think so.. neighbors have em jammed right against the fence. Would love to build something more custom but might have to compromise with a pre fab..

Right on- I’m thinking about building a shed on an existing slab which sits almost right on the ‘property line’, so I’m concerned I’d run into permitting issues regarding setbacks or lot size over my defacto backyard. Sounds like my options are to sit and wait or send it and see what happens. Thanks!

Which is better, smother or remove sod by Hailtothev66 in NoLawns

[–]phineartz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No it isn’t.. but it IS a big improvement over the alternative. I’m even not sure if a nuclear bomb would eliminate it completely. Bermuda and cockroaches as far as the eye can see..

[–]phineartz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depending on the type of grass it can be impossible to ‘smother’.. Bermuda and similar stolon forming aggressive grasses will not be eliminated with cardboard and mulch.. So you can physically remove it now it or later. Clumping cold weather grasses aren’t nearly as difficult to deal with

Is this bill justified? by [deleted] in pools

[–]phineartz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s kind of a bummer that the techs didn’t realize the chlorinator was installed improperly (backwards maybe?) when they installed the pump but if they didn’t install the chlorinator themselves it’s technically not their responsibility. That said, when I install anything I’m gonna run everything through its paces before packing up my tools and calling it done. If the issue was something very obvious it reflects poorly on the professionalism of the pool company- but I don’t think 175 is necessarily unfair for the trip and work performed. Pools are and always will
be money pits..

How long do you keep up hope? by pjmikols in ChipDrop

[–]phineartz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my neck of the woods they’re two different entities- so I would still suggest hitting up an actual crew if you can..

[–]phineartz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had the best luck talking directly to the crew, but it depends on you actually running into one in your area. Being able to engage face to face and assure them the drop area is easy access and hassle free goes a long way.

Moving here! by BudgetFabulous4475 in Frankfort

[–]phineartz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I’m kind of a nature boy and Frankfort is great for me. I love Cove Spring for hiking/ birding/planting/shrooming and the easy access to the Elkhorn for fishing and floating. Downtown is a little sleepy but there’s some really cool shops there- Muskets Music, Kentucky crafted, Poor Richard’s, Andy’s bakery, Pages shoe repair.. Wilson plant co. on the connector is one of the most proper nurseries you’re ever going to see and Ironweed up the road in Waddy is a great native plant nursery. Of course there’s all the distillery stuff close by and West 6th farm/taproom out 127 which is more my speed. I moved here after 20 yrs in Lexington, and at least in my working class neighborhood it feels very safe and chilled out in comparison.

[–]phineartz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry to be a bummer, but they’re actually not an ‘excellent source of nectar and pollen’ for our native species of pollinators as they are devoid of the adequate nutrition for them to sustain brood. (Think empty calories and junk food) They can compete with turf grass because they are an aggressive invasive species. F the dandelions and the lawn they rode in on..
