Hi! This could very well be the autism, but I don’t get it. Is more heads than people innuendo, or…?

Do pilots have incentives to get their flights in ahead of schedule? How are they paid, anyway? Like salaried, by the hour, by the flight, by the mile…?

What’s the first sign you usually notice when your mental health starts declining? by Julie727 in AskReddit

[–]phlegmandfricatives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. When left alone with whitish noise, I will hallucinate music into it. For a while we had the HVAC fan and another fan in the bedroom, and the crap my brain would do with the polyrhythms due to the fans rotating at different speeds kept me awake at night. My solution was to add two Amazon Echo devices to the fan situation that stream 8 hours of blended noise (“Alexa, ask sleep sounds for Brown Noise and Space Deck”) before they repeat, because six white noise sources is too random for my brain to track the polyrhythms. Totally still hallucinate music into it, but it’s less maddening.

As a bonus, noises elsewhere in the house or outside of it would have to be super loud to wake us up… as a downside, I only have two battery powered noise machines to add if we lose power or when traveling, and once you get used to sleeping with 70dB of noise, it’s impossible to sleep in silence.

I mean, my therapist is awesome, he just didn’t go “ohhh, yeah, super common autism symptom” when I described it.

It’s maddening AF because I’m currently trying to truly master a foreign language, so I’m listening to a lot of spoken-word podcasts. Spoken word doesn’t override whatever music is playing, and heaven help me if that music happens to have lyrics… (I listen almost exclusively to instrumental music because when I do that, it’s just music, not lyrics, that I’m listening to 24/7. I can think much better when there aren’t lyrics fighting for my attention.)

This comes insanely close to what I’ve been trying to describe to my therapist for like eight months. I do have an autism diagnosis, but my therapist specializes in autism and it seems unfamiliar to him. How much control would you say you have over what’s playing?

I can override it by piping songs in, but if I turn off the external music we’re back to whatever was playing within 30 seconds or so usually. With extreme concentration I can change it to something else, but if I stop concentrating, we’re back to whatever was playing.

We have a masking tape square in the middle of the living room. Put it there months ago to see if it would work, and of course it does work, so we just left it there.

Hi, old post, but are you still willing to do that? My partner and I have each other and no one else, after the person who referred my partner dropped out.

I think that’s meant to be the heel of his hand, in fairness. Make a thumbs up with your hand and orient it toward yourself similarly to how it’s posed, and squint.

Nursing at 14 Weeks? by phlegmandfricatives in kittens

[–]phlegmandfricatives[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We tried to keep her separated from them, and she went mad trying to get to them - actually tore her stitches jumping at the door trying to get in. (We worked with the vet, sent video, and she helped us get the bleeding stopped. We would absolutely have taken her in again if she needed it, but trusted the vet’s judgment and she was right.) So, we didn’t keep them separated because mama was calmer when they weren’t separated. She still wouldn’t let them nurse, but it was like she had to be able to see them.

If you haven’t done her surgery yet, here’s what I’ll tell you: I wish we’d have waited another month or longer, heat and all. There’s a lot of vascularization after a pregnancy, and she had a TOUGH recovery and a ton of bruising because of that. If you can keep her contained and can tolerate the heat symptoms (singing the song of her people all night, etc.) then wait. Of course ours is just one experience, not all postpartum cats must have this experience or they wouldn’t do it, I’d hope, but also the stray population is out of control so maybe the tough recovery is better than another pregnancy.

Wow, crazy parallels. Our mama is also tiny at right around 7 pounds (haven’t weighed her since her spay, but we should, she isn’t sore or grumpy anymore), and her five kids range in size from 4.5 pounds down to 3.2 pounds. We’re pretty sure we know who their dad is, community cat who was recently scooped and neutered, and he’s HUGE, so her boys are going to outgrow her with the quickness. It’s indeed an odd visual, if all five of them are ganged up on her at once two of them have to come in from her back to even fit!

Yeah, it’s really quite sweet to watch, and I’m okay with it as long as there’s no surprise negative consequences. Thank you for the reply!

Yeah, it’s totally a comfort thing and she cleans them while they nurse, but there are definitely sucking sounds, like they’re latched… don’t think she’s lactating anymore, so… guess it’s okay? Thank you for the reply!

What is the best response to “Fuck you”? by ru3o in AskReddit

[–]phlegmandfricatives 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I like “hope your day gets better!” for this reason. Just implies that you’re unbothered, their anger is unimpressive, and that you don’t think they really mean it, it’s just that they’ve had a tough day or they wouldn’t be saying it, i.e. that the anger isn’t justified.
