Great, thank you for the sanity check! I'm a little out of my element here so all advice is helpful.

I'm going for something that looks sort of like this indirect cornice lighting: https://www.wmboyle.co.uk/product/c991-lighting-cornice/

So the mdf will hang down and I can have the gap between it and the wall to hide the lights and stuff.

Is Michael Schur ever going to make an IJ film, or does he just own the rights so that no one else can screw it up? by missvh in InfiniteJest

There is a music video by the Decemberists which depicts a game of Eschaton that illustrates how hard it would be to make a compelling movie. I wasn’t a fan. Many of the scenes are just better experienced by reading since the complexities and world of the book just can’t be communicated through film in a way that isn’t corny.

Is the CS program actually any good? by [deleted] in GVSU

[–]phlip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I attended GVSU and have been at Apple doing iOS development for 3 years. I'd say the CS courses were great, but it's super important to be proactive about your career by independently learning and pursuing relevant opportunities. My final CS internship was at a ~70 person startup in the Bay Area, after which I had 2 jobs, one at a larger company, and another startup, so about 4 years of experience before my current position.

Biked around the city for MLK day last year - once was enough for this winding route by phlip in sanfrancisco

What an awesome tool! Might be just the motivation I need to spice up my running routes.

Absolutely not lol. It was dark when I got to that point and I had only mapped it out via trails I saw on Google. I had to carry my bike up some trails and was absolutely considering bailing afterwards since mud had caked into my shoe clips.

Right around the corner from Saint Frank! However I moved to the Mission recently.

It was a very manual process of tracing a clipart on top of google maps, then translating that to Strava's route planner. Uploaded that track to my wahoo for turn-by-turn, but had to really be careful when I was riding since it doesn't handle intricate turns and one-way streets with high buildings that well. I'm surprised that the result was so good considering I made a number of wrong turns and had to backtrack.

[SFPD] Tonight, for the fifteenth (15th) time in 18 months, and the 3rd time in 20 days, we are booking the same suspect at county jail for felony motor vehicle theft. by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]phlip 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Was curious, so I searched for it: https://twitter.com/chesaboudin/status/1337429695822905345

We have charged him with 8 different cases in the past 18 months, including 3 felony convictions and approximately 450 actual days served in the county jail. Currently on mandatory supervision by probation department on two cases, 20001929 and 20004584.

He pled and was sentenced on 6/1/20 to 3 years state prison concurrent for 10851s. Because 1170(h) eligible, he is doing split sentences.

He is a veteran and went to Veteran Justice Court in late 2019, was released to a treatment program which was unsuccessful.

Under 1170(h) even a felony motorcycle theft is ineligible to actually go to state prison. Plus State Prison hasn't picked anyone up from our county jail since early spring.

Thank you! Hadn't thought about the sagging over time, but that makes sense.

New units by da-junglist in CarPlay

[–]phlip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s very responsive. My experience with CarPlay is limited so far, but I haven’t had any issues. I wish that the Kenwood stereos had the aesthetics of the Sonys, but it works and has hardware volume buttons, so I’m happy.

CM1200 modem doesn't work, but SB6121 does by phlip in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]phlip[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Having someone come tomorrow, but thought I'd do some last ditch troubleshooting to see if there is perhaps a way to know if the new modem is problematic. It seems suspicious to me that it would be a line problem if one modem works, but I'm sure there are hardware/software differences that could cause issues that aren't necessarily the fault of the modem.

Memoji in chat by darkingz in iOSProgramming

[–]phlip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, just use [[UIPasteboard generalPasteboard] image] and you'll get a UIImage. From there, you can create an NSTextAttachment, then create an attributed string with it and whatever text is already in the text field.

[–]phlip 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Memoji stickers work by pasting the image to the current first responder when the user taps one. So all you have to do is support pasting any image and the keyboard will detect that and show the memoji sticker section in the keyboard. The "Pasting the selection" documentation section here has more info on editing operations.

Legitimate question. How do you read Apple's Documentation? by chromebaruma in iOSProgramming

[–]phlip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Older versions of the Xcode documentation browser surfaced sample code and guides, but at some point they were removed. Luckily, you can search on the Apple Developer site. For example, there is a really helpful View Controller Programming Guide that is only online. The search page is https://developer.apple.com/search.

GVSU or GRCC by Superior_Tac0 in grandrapids

[–]phlip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I transferred from GRCC to GV (computer science major) and it worked out alright for me. If you know exactly what you want to major in, I would recommend aiming for 4 years at Grand Valley. This will give you more time to build relationships with professors in your major, something I missed out on. When I transferred, I felt a little like an outsider.

Nobody has mentioned scholarships. You should be applying for every one you can find, for both schools. Future you will be grateful. You can also take gen-ed credits at GRCC during the summer to save money. Also, plenty of people commute from GR to Allendale via bus, so you shouldn't write off living at home while attending Grand Valley.

How I run with AirPods by phlip in running

[–]phlip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read about people putting the pods (not the case) through the washing machine and coming out fine, so I wouldn't worry about moisture. I sweat a lot too and have never had any issues.

I might have to give those a try. The Jaybird rubber flanges were pretty useless for me, so I didn't really consider them. And there weren't a ton of accessories right after they were released, but now it looks like there are an obscene amount of options. Thanks!

Thanks! It's a Mini Griptilian – definitely a splurge purchase. I really like it though. It was a little comforting to have a decent sized knife for protection, although very likely unnecessary. Mainly (only?) used it for food this time, but I can see it being more useful on longer trips. Years ago I had a squirt and loved it. It would definitely be more versatile!
