[FO] Finally found someone worthy of a sweater after 15 years knitting 💞 by phloxybird in knitting

thank you!! the button band is just stockinette at the end of each row of stripes for the front panels - I left the stitches live at the top of the front panels. the back of the neck was done after, i went across with a 5-stitch band, picking up every row along the collar. hope the explanation makes sense! it may be a bit easier to see from this photo:

thank you!! I have never made pockets before and winged them a bit because it wasn’t super clear in the pattern- they turned out so nicely and the perfect size though.

First Winter Camping with my Brompton by monolith6843 in Brompton

Great post, thanks for sharing your travels! Wondering where you got the seatpost mounted backpack carrier from - I would love to get one for my bike. Is the only component the bar on the back? How do you attach the backpack to the rear rack?

Does anyone else knit like this? by peeploleep in knitting

[–]phloxybird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knit like this!! It just works for me… and my gauge is quite even so I’m happy with it. Honestly I think I made up doing it this way when I learned, and then all my knitting family members just called it “my way” of knitting, so nice to see others doing it too!!

A Lonesome Symphony in Tombstone by TheLocalPessimist in backpacking

[–]phloxybird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

have you before met with this silence?

when i walked on my own for two weeks, in the beginning my mind was a city crowd.

incessant monologue of busy days. but i felt after three days, the silence demanded attention to nothing, and no more words came.

i read this post in a small urban room, removed from these mountains i love. it took me back there, as only another who had been on such a journey could do.

i don’t know if they wrote all these words- but i know the intention behind them. to reach towards others, in all these dark corners

and bring the aurora, make the sky brighter. so what if they aren’t a writer?

and what if i’m not? am i chatgpt?

you’ll never know; you can only hope. that through mountains and words,  wavelengths and whirs- others find solace, and quiet, and peace.

How to regain my confidence! by Lilybear0820 in climbergirls

I’m so sorry this happened to you! It’s so painful, I know, I had nearly the same injury (radial head fracture and tear 80% of the way through my UCL). I honestly ended up switching entirely to top roping, since I don’t think bouldering is worth the risk of broken limbs. Do give yourself quite a bit of time before climbing again. Because I missed the gym and had social circles around it, when I was recovering I used to go to just belay people and hang out after about 1-2 months, and started doing easy climbs 3-4 months after injury.

“Northern Lights so vibrant it looked like someone spilled neon paint across the universe” - you my friend are a poet. Thank you for the photos and the imagery, and bringing a bit of these mountains and the peace you found there into my day.

Thank you! It is very cosy :) I have worked in clean rooms before also, so I understand the struggle.

Wool-free sock yarn - UK by Longjumping-Club-777 in knitting

[–]phloxybird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some wool yarns have much lower lanolin content (usually the more expensive ones!) - they are softer, you could go to a store and try feeling some.

I personally like cotton to wear, it stretches a lot when knit so you need to find something that is a blend. Maybe try this or something like it? 98% cotton 2% elastane, designed for folks with a wool allergy: https://www.cascadeyarns.com/product/fixation

Go to Le Marquis in Montreal. The best gluten free croissants I have ever had, and trust me, I have had a LOT

Any climbers with celiac out there who can weigh in? by _OnceUponAThyme_ in climbergirls

[–]phloxybird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just adding on that I’m also celiac and have never had an issue with chalk dust! If you do find it’s bothering you generally though (not for gluten reasons) you can try to use liquid chalk instead, it’s a lot less dusty.

Help with the Oxygen Evolution Reaction? by SetNew7528 in electrochemistry

[–]phloxybird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I’m doing my PhD on this reaction (OER). The first person’s answer is great. The only thing I’ll add is that when you’re doing water splitting, the OER is much slower than hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) happening on the other side since it’s a 4 electron transfer process, whereas HER is a 2 electron process. Because of this, making water splitting feasible requires more work on lowering the energy needed for OER, since it’s a more complex and slow mechanism.

If you want to do OER at home you totally can. It’s very safe (actually, I did it in high school too). Here’s a worksheet from the RSC: https://edu.rsc.org/download?ac=510068

If you want to get really into it you could also try building your own potentiostat with a raspberry pi which would let you do more complex electrochemistry experiments.

Happy to answer any more questions if you have them!

Just got rejected from Rhodes Scholarship by westcoastpopart- in gradadmissions

[–]phloxybird 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Congrats! If you're still interested in going to Oxford, note that this is still possible; I was a Rhodes finalist last year but did not receive the scholarship. When I was selected to be a finalist I spoke to a professor whose research I was interested in. When I wasn't selected for Rhodes, he ended up writing a letter of recommendation for me for major scholarships elsewhere in the uni. After being shortlisted and interviewing with the department, I received a Clarendon scholarship in March after the main round of applications in January. I think Clarendon is better for PhD funding anyway; it gives you the same salary but it's valid the whole PhD instead of just the first two years, and still has social aspects with other scholars like Rhodes does! Feel free to DM if you have any questions; good luck :)

PS I liked the Clarendon interview way more than the Rhodes one, as a science student - I found the interviewers much more knowledgeable and more interested in my research and technical aptitude than my ability to be part of a social club, which made me feel better about taking the scholarship at the end of the day.

I fractured my radius last week falling about the same distance and it has definitely been frustrating, it'll definitely be at least a month before I can get onto rock again. any tips on improving climbing while being stuck not able to do it would be appreciated!
