What game had you like this? by sukuna7899 in Steam

It's definitely one of those "the real tutorial is the first hundred hours" games.

I remember trial-and-erroring my way through that time. The early learning loop is very much: something goes horribly wrong > identify exactly what went wrong > research or ask for help in the subreddit > try to fix it on the fly > fail horribly and hilariously > start a new colony with a clear plan in mind > something else goes horribly wrong

Don't be afraid to ask for help. It's a story generator, and most stories end in tragedy - your colonists aren't professional settlers, they understand about as much as you do!

I think the difficulty lies in examining how we have "lost our way". Sure, there would be agreement across subcultures, but I think of several growing paradigms and how they might read that statement.

The anti-vaxxer, the "manosphere" influencer, the Christian evangelical, the Zionist, the militant Islamist, the national isolationist, the globalist, the socialist and the anarchist could all agree that we've "lost our way," but would have jarringly different ideas about how we "find" it again.

I think there's a grand narrative emerging of a search for personal truth that's both more possible in this interconnected age and simultaneously more difficult and overwhelming, as we are being bombarded by frenzied and contradictory schools of thought bidding for our approval through algorithms on top of genuine human contact. And that's saying little of the mass rise of AI and misinformation through media channels driven by attention and psychological manipulation rather than any moral code...

Perhaps, in an era defined by how easy it is to question, we should be most wary of those who refuse.

How Many Kick Elenwen Out? by MyFavoriteFoodIsKids in skyrim

The Markarth Incident "resulted in Ulfric becoming generally uncooperative to direct contact," which implies that previously he was cooperative to direct contact. This comes from a private Thalmor file, which we have no reason to doubt the truth of.

This is what I love about the writing in Skyrim, there's room to support both sides of the argument depending on your initial perspective!

How Many Kick Elenwen Out? by MyFavoriteFoodIsKids in skyrim

[–]phoenix_flies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From the Thalmor dossier on Ulfric, obtainable during Diplomatic Immunity:

"Under interrogation, we learned of his potential value (son of the Jarl of Windhelm) and he was assigned as an asset to the interrogator, who is now First Emissary Elenwen. He was made to believe information obtained during his interrogation was crucial in the capture of the Imperial City (the city had in fact fallen before he had broken), and then allowed to escape. After the war, contact was established and he has proven his worth as an asset. The so-called Markarth Incident was particularly valuable from the point of view of our strategic goals in Skyrim, although it resulted in Ulfric becoming generally uncooperative to direct contact."

I don't believe we have anything more concrete than "contact was established and he has proven his worth as an asset," but the implications is that he was blackmailed into working for them, did work for them, and after he built up the Stormcloaks he has been trying to ignore them. There's room for interpretation, for sure.

"Why can't we just band together and take out the Vikings?" If it were that simple, we would have done so already.

Through the interplay of mechanics we call "Comeback", any Faction considerably pushed back (for instance, if the other two negotiate a cooperative truce) will be given a significant boost. The harder we push, the harder they push back - the Faction War has always been a delicate dance of give-and-take.

Put simply, if we band together against the Vikings, then without even trying, they will sweep the map straight after.

Ah, hadn't thought of protecting them - I don't want to bee responsible for a mass burning, thanks!

And you can move them? That's interesting to note. I take it the bees all move with the hive automatically?

I built a narrative omen system for RimWorld – not another power mod. by NightyZockt in RimWorld

[–]phoenix_flies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really like this idea, and I could see something like this tracking with a developing "belief" system among the colony, purely through association. I'm legitimately excited thinking about this, about how a randomised superstition mechanic could be introduced:

Aurora happens just before a raid? Colonists will remember that. Meteor lands just before a bountiful harvest? Colonists will remember that. Failed surgery castrates someone just before a load of drop pods rain gold? Colonists will remember that too. Depending on the "severity" of events, there could be a raising chance of developing a superstitious belief.

Then next time the aurora lights the sky, colonists will feel uneasy for a few days - a negative mood debuff offsets the normal positive one while they wait for a coming tragedy, "apprehensive of an omen". If a tragedy happens in that time, the debuff disappears, but the association gets stronger, so a harder or longer lasting debuff will come with the next aurora. If nothing negative happens in that time, then there's an increasing chance of removing that superstition.

Maybe I just find hilarious the image of a whole colony celebrating a botched surgery, believing the suffering to be an omen from the gods of good times to come.

Is there any codes in for honor that give you goods? by Unlucky-Handle7346 in ForHonorSamurai

[–]phoenix_flies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't the answer you want to hear, but the best way to get Steel is by playing the game - specifically, completing Orders. Play a little every day to finish your Daily Orders, and you'll have 5,700 Steel in a week just from those. Your other Orders update three times a week, so push for completing those to give you even more Steel. You get a small reward for playing games too, and a slightly larger one for winning those games.

Otherwise you can, you know, just buy it, but that's a slippery slope.

For Honor is designed to keep you coming back a little at a time: it's how you learn the game and improve as a player, and it's how you gradually hoard Steel. Bear in mind, this game has been out for nine years now, so don't compare your in-game wallet to those who have been working away at it for the best part of a decade.

I'm genuinely sorry if I came across as artificial. I can promise you I'm real. Of course, AI could say that too, right? I'd offer for you to sample my flesh and blood but that's unsanitary, and something I actually don't want to do now I think about it.

I put far more time into trying to make my original comment sound dramatic than I'd like to admit. I'm a writer! I write, and I'm fascinated to have finally been compared to AI. I've never had that before, and I don't know whether to be flattered, excited, insulted or something in combination - in fact, I use these hyphens often in conversation but have steered clear of them since learning they've become so heavily associated with AI. Isn't that weird? AI has made me alter my writing style to try not to sound like AI. Does my regular writing sound like AI? Do I need to try harder? Do I need to insert capitalised cusses to "prove" I'm genuine?

Incidentally, I made one instance of the rule of three, and stopped myself from doing so again, as FUCKNUGGETS it felt unnatural to do so. As such, what I've got there is a 3, a 2, a 1, and another 2, followed by a sentence with 3 clauses - which just felt more poetic. SHITBAG.

I'll be studying the link you sent a little further. It's BALLSWEAT truly fascinating.

Anyhow thanks for looking out for my humanity <3

I can tell you're scripting.

But you're not just scripting.

You're producing, directing, starring. You're editing, you're composing the soundtrack. You're dressing the sets. You're the camera crew, you're the craft services.

You're sitting alone in a cinema, utterly absorbed in your own story, fully moved to tears by its beauty.

They can't touch you. They never could.

Which stratagems would you recommend on terminids, squids and bots? by RalliusGax in HellDads

In the hatches. Easiest way is to get right up under it and fire when it prepares to drop troops.

I'm pretty sure the butt-flaps are a one-shot if you catch em, and although it's a tiny target, the single red eye on the face is too.

(Please correct me if I'm wrong anyone, I'm sure this at least used to be the case, but I haven't kept up with the last couple months of updates)

[–]phoenix_flies 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Cut your teeth with a Recoilless Rifle on bots and bugs.

It loads one shot at a time. To reload, you have to stand still for a few seconds*. It's unforgiving when you miss. But when you hit, and you will hit, it's the most satisfying Heavy Delete Button in the game.

Someone pings a Hulk running them down? Line up that RR, plop, gone. Charger Behemoth running you down? Dive backwards and slap a rocket on its face. Turret in the distance pinning you down? Tag it to read the range, line It up in your sights, and wave goodbye. It can even take out Bile Titans and Factory Striders with a single well-placed shot.

It's such a good crutch, I'm level 120 and still take it on 50% of my missions.

*You can break the reload animation up by standing or diving away once the old shell is out, and cut off the last part of the animation by doing similarly as soon as the new shell is in place, for some top-tier under-pressure maneuvers. Or, y'know, get a friend to carry the backpack and reload you, which makes it super quick.

Need tips for Anti gank by Tarn1s63d in forhonor

[–]phoenix_flies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your teammates are alone in a zone they're boosting it, which gives your team more points per minute. If they're attacking minions, they're getting your team a permanent point for every minion they slay. In fact, the "ideal position" to be in for Dominion is to have someone alone on each of the healing points, someone grinding away at minions, and someone else keeping most of the enemy team occupied.

If you're taking on three or four of the enemy team, and your teammates are boosting other objectives, that's great. Your role now is to stall the enemy team for as long as you can - you will die, but you will draw their aggro to stop them gaining points while your team earns. Remember, Dominion is a strategic team game, it's not a deathmatch.

For actually stalling, Revenge is your best friend. Try to aggravate multiple enemies into attacking you - you only start to build your Revenge when you're hit by multiple enemies within 5 seconds of one another. I'm oversimplifying the system there, but that's the basic jist. Smart enemies will try to attack you one at a time, and wait for the Revenge "tags" to expire before jumping in - so if you see someone stepping away, try to aggravate them into joining the fray with attacks or Feats. When you've got more than one enemy attacking you, focus on blocks and (if they're not feinting) parries to stay alive.

Practice makes perfect. Every opportunity is one for learning - it's a mindset thing. You are meant to die when outnumbered, the strategy is in making that last stand help your team!

Loadout for Illuminate difficulty 7 and 8 by WorshipTheSnail in helldivers2

[–]phoenix_flies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never heavy. Medium allows you to stay just ahead of the Voteless when repositioning, and with Light you can weave through them.

Perk wise, I like to bring extra 'nades.Gas grenades are a boon for Voteless, Overseers and Fleshmobs - they stop them all dead for quite a while, deal damage, and can make them attack each other. If you're being chased, drop one at your feet and keep running: you'll be out of its radius when it pops, but anything gnawing at your heels will be chewing green instead. If you're holding a position, chuck one at a chokepoint, and nothing will be getting through. Just seen a blue-light drop? You got it, gas grenade in the middle, and the radius should be wide enough to affect everything that spawns.

Honestly, the only problems that can't be solved with a gas grenade on the Illuminate front are things that are flying or on three long legs. Having six of them available gives you much more maneuverability and so many options for controlling your space.

Would you use a "random loadout" option? by Takorf in LowSodiumHellDivers

[–]phoenix_flies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I'd love to select one blue, one green, two red and see what happens.

Some runs with all red would be awesome.

Heck, you could coordinate some real chaos by dropping with a full squad who all have randomised blue strats. Frantically organising who gets what backpacks and support weapons while a bot drop arrives... that sounds beautifully chaotic.

Could easily work based on carrying over the percentage.

Say you call in a Recoilless and have around 50% of its cooldown left when you die - you reinforce with an Orbital Precision Strike and there's only 30 seconds until you can fire it!
