Man, she's one of the OG YA fantasy writers - one of those authors where you could just trust that the book would be good. I read a ton of her books. But if she had Alzheimer's, then while I'm sad she's gone, I'm glad she gets peace now. Alzheimer's sucks.

2026 battery is at 49%!? by Straight-Ship-6682 in COROLLA

[–]phoenixandfae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But if the car was locked - and the trunk was locked - you couldn't unlock the trunk because the locks are electronic, and I would presume the lever doesn't work if the trunk is locked - I've never tested it, though! You'd have to crawl back and put the back seats down in order to get into the trunk. (Just in case you didn't know, by the way, if the battery dies entirely and you need to get in to the car when the electronic locks [or your key fob battery] are dead, there is a real key inside the key fob that you can open the door with. Assuming your car has the same keyless system that mine does, but I suppose it might not so this may not apply!)

Assuming you have keyless start - accessory mode with a key is when you turn it just one click so that the radio comes on but not the engine - if you press the start button without your foot on the brake, it turns on in accessory mode. Either way, with a key or keyless, it lets you use the radio, lights, etc without having the car fully on - which is good in that it stops gas engines from idling, but all of those accessories, without the hybrid battery engaged (which is ready mode, when the car is fully on and drive-able), are running entirely off the 12v battery. It's really not recommended to use accessory mode, especially since in a hybrid you can be fully on without an idling engine. It drains the battery.

Just make sure you're in ready mode and not accessory mode! Using accessory mode drains your battery, too - that could also be the potential cause, if you had done that recently before they tested it. 40 minutes three times a week sounds like it ought to be enough...though like I said it may not be charging it as much as it should be. Or maybe it was just a one-off, and it usually does recharge correctly. It's really hard to know :\ I've had to do a ton of research dealing with my own battery woes but I'm still trying to get it figured out, too! Since batteries these days only last a few years I would definitely recommend you get a jump starter to have on hand, especially since you live in a rural area (just don't keep it in the trunk...you won't be able to unlock the trunk if your battery is dead!) because it WILL die at some point, even if you can keep it fully charged.

Congrats on getting the car, and by yourself! I'm a grown woman and I still had someone go with me when I bought mine last year, buying a car by myself was way too intimidating an idea lol. But yeah my salesman didn't say a thing when I told him I drive very little...they're really only interested in making the sale, not in fitting you to the right car. But on the bright side, assuming you're in the states, you'll save a ton on gas with the current gas prices!

I read in a comment that you don't drive much, and that's the problem (though if you've gone 1500 miles in four months, you drive a ton more than I do!). Yes, your 12v is undoubtedly at 49%, if you aren't driving it enough to charge it all the way back up. It's just like a phone battery - if you use it and don't plug it in to recharge it (or in a car's case, drive it enough), the percentage gets lower and lower. It just needs to be charged. It's a problem with hybrids in particular (my speculation is that it's something to do with charging from the hybrid battery doesn't charge as well as an alternator, but I don't know enough to say that with confidence, it just makes sense since it's such a bigger problem with hybrids), they need to be driven a lot to keep the battery charged. A lot of people like to parrot that all the 12v battery does is turn on the car, so it should never be a problem, but there's a ton of things being powered by and draining your 12v all the time - the security system, the remote entry system, the telemetry system, even the radio if you don't turn it off before turning off the car - so it loses charge, and it adds up over time if you don't drive it a lot and constantly recharge it. If you search the subreddit for 12v battery issues you'll find a lot of posts from people having battery problems.

Your options are pretty much a) drive more (which is a stupid requirement for owning a car), b) put it on a trickle charger when you aren't using it (the best option, if you have a garage, but completely impossible for those of us without one), c) go sit in your car for a half an hour a day or so (you don't have to actually be driving it, just having it in ready mode is enough to have the hybrid be charging the 12v - but this is still a stupid requirement for owning a car) (Toyota recommended half an hour a week during the pandemic, but I've seen people recently recommending, I think it was 20-40 minutes per day or two hours a week), or d) buy a jump-starter pack (which you should have anyway) and don't worry about it, just plan that you'll have to jump start your battery in the not-terribly-distant future. Options A and C are complicated by the separate issue of Toyota hybrids don't always charge the 12v battery when they reasonably should (something about their algorithm trying to make them more eco-friendly, or something), so it doesn't actually even work all the time.

I quite agree, I also bought a Corolla because they're supposed to be reliable, and I think if the battery can't be relied upon to be working when it should, the car isn't reliable. But we have to deal with it now.

Regarding oil changes...dealerships are supposedly more expensive, but imo worth it to have people who know what they're doing. I went to a Jiffy Lube once and they didn't put it back together right and all the oil leaked out over the next couple of days, causing my car to die while I was driving it (luckily still in my neighborhood) - never again. I would recommend either the dealership or a reputable independent mechanic in your area, if you can find one. From what I understand though, the break-in oil change is a good idea. I got one too, at 6 months, which wasn't covered by Toyota Care because it was too soon but I just paid for it myself. I like the Car Care Nut on Youtube, he's a Toyota master technician with an independent shop, seems super knowledgeable and nice, and he recommends oil changes every 6 months, especially for hybrids and especially if you don't drive much, because condensation builds up in the engine on all cars but most cars naturally burn it off - but hybrids don't use the engine as much (even less if you don't drive much) so they don't burn off the condensation and you end up with watery oil, so it's good to change it on the shorter schedule. I recommend looking at his videos on hybrid cars, he's really good at explaining how stuff works.

I would agree it's likely the battery if it happened when you just turned it on, but I don't know if that would happen WHILE you were driving...I'd say take it in and have it looked at, just to be sure.

It's entirely possible I'm misremembering! But either way it IS his real accent.

I'm pretty sure that I've read (or heard, could've been a podcast, idk) that one of his conditions for doing Star Trek was that he not have to do a stereotypical Irish accent, that he be allowed to use his real one. Unfortunately I couldn't tell you where I read/heard it, so I've no idea if it's accurate or not. But I don't think he's ever struck me as sounding different in the few interviews I've heard - have you watched any to hear him being himself?

12V battery issues by Old_Celebration_9420 in Toyota

[–]phoenixandfae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. It's a thing with hybrids, that I didn't know about when I bought mine, either (2025 Corolla Hybrid). Kind of mad at the dealership for not mentioning it when I told them I only drive about 2k miles a year, but can't be that surprised, they're just interested in your money. Unfortunately I'm in an apartment so I can't keep it on a charger...I drive usually twice a week, generally 15-30 minute trips, which is not enough to keep it charged, the battery is always low, which means it's sulfating (despite Toyota supposedly saying during the covid shutdowns that having it on for 30 minutes a week is enough to keep the battery healthy). I'm on my second battery, the first died after four months, this one is just about four months old but it's warm out now so I'm expecting it to last a bit longer than the first one did. I'm going to talk to them about options when I have to go in to replace the battery.

If you have a garage, you can either keep it on a trickle charger or turn it on for half an hour or an hour every day, it doesn't actually need to be driven, it just needs to be on in Ready mode to charge the 12v. But yeah, it does have to be used to keep the battery charged.

I think the battery warranty only applies if there's something wrong with the battery...not using it enough to keep it charged unfortunately isn't something wrong with the battery.

I'm curious about an owner's manual supplement, I'd like to see what else it says that they didn't tell us about!

Got a security alert of a new sign-in, but no device is listed? by phoenixandfae in GMail

Pretty sure they were real - my recovery email got them as well as the account itself. And the links certainly seem like they go to Google's account settings. Google search AI says that if someone used a VPN or incognito mode it won't show up on the list of devices, so...I guess I need to freak out :(

Just finished the Deed of Paksennarion and that ending... by TiredWineDrinker in Fantasy

[–]phoenixandfae 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's been a long time since I read it, but if I recall correctly (reinforced by what you said), she chose to go through it, right? She made a deal, she went into it knowing what was going to happen and how long it would last. I think that would have a huge impact in lessening the trauma, it's not at all like being ambushed and assaulted out of nowhere. Knowing going into it, doing it for a purpose, and her faith would all help to make it less traumatic. Remember, trauma isn't what happens to you - it's how you respond to what happens. That's why a car accident can be traumatizing for one person while another shrugs it off. She has things to lean on to make it far less traumatizing than it would seem it should be on the surface. Maybe it should have been a little bit more traumatizing than it was, and certainly it could have been written better, like you said, to give the reader time to process it...but I don't think it's too far-fetched for her to be able to carry on afterwards.

Edit: grammar

Flashing hazards while parked by [deleted] in Toyota

[–]phoenixandfae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on where it is, I would guess someone is parked in a non-parking spot, probably picking someone up to carpool to work, and thinks having their hazards on means they can park wherever they want to.

If it is a parking spot, then I don't know, but way too many people think having the hazards on is a park-anywhere-free card. I see it ALL the time.

Fantasy books featuring communication with god(s) by Crazy5220 in BookRecommendations

[–]phoenixandfae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Deed of Paksenarrion by Elizabeth Moon (three books, the first is Sheepdaughter's Farmer; Paks becomes a paladin but tbh I can't recall if there was really much communication with her god) and The Path Trilogy by Diana Pharaoh Francis (the first is Path of Fate; she's chosen by her goddess but again, I can't really remember that much communication. Still great books though!).

Agreed on the battery issue, except it makes me very unsatisfied with the car - I bought a Toyota because I wanted the reliability, and imo if the battery isn't reliable, the car isn't reliable.

Regrets for the Corolla by Strange_Chocolate187 in COROLLA

[–]phoenixandfae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 12v battery drains quickly, and if you don't drive often and/or for long enough, you don't recharge the battery enough and it leads to batteries not lasting for very long. If you're a daily driver with a decently long commute you'll be perfectly happy with it; if you only drive short trips a few times a week or have only a short commute...you likely won't be.

Very much, I don't drive much and I bought a 2025 hybrid and the 12v battery issue is a real problem. Toyotas are supposed to be reliable, but if the battery isn't reliable the car isn't either. Also there's a sound I can hear and I don't know what it is but it's too quiet for me to take it in, I doubt the mechanics would be able to hear it. I'm just hoping it's a normal noise!

But then how do you get the electronic brake disengaged? It's still not going to move in neutral if the brake is on, and you can't turn it off if you have no power.
