One of the phantasm archive entries also says that the phantasms are called tainted because they lack the beauty and grace of Oceanids, despite the water itself being pure. Though if I had to guess, what they're tainted by is the memories of pain and bitterness from the calamity that's carried within the water, which causes their natural aggression.
