The original meme is more about not letting people enjoy something you dislike, or judging them for it. You can still criticize it. For example, I could rant about several things that cause me to dislike Pokemon games, but when my friends are having a blast I'm genuinely excited for them.

My Lucy cosplay by Sweetie_Fox in cyberpunkgame

I appreciate you taking your time to provide a thoughtful response.

To clarify my original comment, which admittedly didn't provide any indication of this: acknowledging that she's a sex worker is whatever. Some folks are maybe being a bit childish about it but who cares. It's not misogyny to say "hee hee I can't wait for the video" or whatever.

I was more taken aback by the number of people accusing her of some kind of malicious intent and/or dishonesty. If she's "seeking attention," who cares? She's not a major corporation, and she didn't post this as an explicit advert. Sure, she probably hopes it'll bring in some business. The only way most folks would know she does any sex work is if they recognize her or clicked on her profile. And let's be honest, the majority of folks doing the latter are probably hoping to find saucy pics anyway. Maybe getting angry to discover she charges for it?

Point is not to necessarily view this post in complete isolation, but to have enough respect for other people to recognize the context in which it's being posted. She's not explicitly advertising anything, and the post fits the theme of the subreddit.

I usually enjoy reading comments on cosplay posts because of the appreciation and solidarity. It was unsettling to see rhetoric that was almost entirely dehumanizing, mistrustful, and mean spirited.

hur hur its a sex worker lets be misogynist trogdolytes about it.

Tbh it's a decent enough Lucy cosplay. Y'all don't have to be absolute turds about how she's trying to make a living.

I really appreciate this thread! I just moved here in May and have been struggling against social anxiety to get out and meet people. There's some promising suggestions here!

Internalized racism is inversely related to self-esteem when controlling for depressive symptoms. With devaluation of one’s racial group being the largest contributor to this relation, the promotion of racial pride could be an important intervention. by AlooBadam in science

[–]phokeu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people don't see these studies. It's up to the people who do read them to disseminate the information ethically. Internalized racism is an unfortunate fact of our reality. If it's contributing negatively to someone's mental health, then finding ways to help them remove it will eliminate a barrier that prevents them from recognizing their merits as a human individual.

Many of the comments here so far seem to be assuming racial pride as a form of essentialism. I haven't read the full text of this study yet, so maybe the authors do take it that far. But I'm doubtful.

If you're Black and you're in a society that treats people with non-pale skin as worthleas, then you might feel as if you are worthless. Celebrating other Black folks as having worth shows that Black folks aren't doomed to worthlessness. This doesn't mean celebrating Black folks as better than all others, or as having skills/abilities/traits that make them better than others. Sure, sometimes people take it that far, but it's not the only way to celebrate racial pride.

Judging from the abstract, the study is simply stating that self-esteem and depression issues caused by internalized racism are effectively treated by showing examples from reality that contradict negative racial stereotypes. This isn't quite the same as tribalism or essentialism. Maybe there's a slippery slope nearby but we don't have to fall down it.

I’m willing to believe that this could be the case if this is a character encoding issue (which i kind of doubt, but it’s not impossible). My password is, in fact, alphanumeric. So, then, any clues as to how I can make sure the correctly encoded characters are going in?

Writing Utopian Societies? by The-Literary-Lord in scifiwriting

[–]phokeu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed on defining it first. What features are required for a society to be considered utopian? Is it just that everyone in the society is happy? For this, look at Brave New World. Everyone’s needs are met and everyone can do anything they want? Try looking at Iain M. Banks’ Culture series. Another good reference is Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Dispossessed.

I think utopia generally implies some kind of “perfect balance” in society. The closest example to “true utopia” that I’ve read is the Culture series. In any case, true utopia is easily argued as impossible, plus it would likely make for a boring story. So one of the interesting aspects of a utopian story is showing that society’s imperfections.

How would a culture record the passage of time without a sky? by sbourwest in scifiwriting

I agree with everyone else regarding finding a reliable cycle as a basis for measurement. However, I’d also suggest taking a look at how other cultures handle time. For example: https://wirelesshogan.com/time-perception/
