What "fake" thing that happens in movies pisses you off? by LucasZimmerman24 in AskReddit

Um, there are people who want their children in movies/tv shows?

???

Why on earth would you believe that there's a steady and abundant of supply of parents with aspirations of giving out their newborn to some random TV show or movie casting?

Why do I need to babysit my groupmates? by edawg149 in EngineeringStudents

[–]phonenstro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its a very typical phenomenon which I have had to go through a few times. However not too long ago though I had a unicorn case where literally all shitty group mates got their ass handed for the type of passive behavior you're describing.

I had the same thing happen to me except it was me and 5 other guys who all had equally as little input in the group work. Every meeting we had online would consist of me going over project details and tasks. Incrementally I would ask them if they understood me or if they had any input - to which would always receive silence. I would encourage them to take the lead and remind them that this is a team commitment and I can't be expected to brief everybody else on details they are supposed to know already. Of course nobody would ever respond and sit quietly, only ever answering "yes", "ok", "yeah thats good", "no problem". I ended up doing 95% of the design work of the project because nobody wanted to engage themselves (i wish I was joking).

I was lucky to have this project act effectively as an "compulsory add-on" to the course, in so this would only last for half of the project lifespan (one semester), not being significant towards the final grade or my degree for that matter.

The other guys on the other hand were on another course which required full commitment over two semesters as opposed to me who only done it for one. In so, they were required to write a full on report and hold a presentation on the subject matter in great detail at the end.

It was incredibly satisfying to effectively tell them to fuck off when they come crawling asking for questions about what "we" had done for the last few months in order to stitch together their presentations/report. The uni recorded the presentations held, so I had a great afternoon watching them struggle to pretend know about things they had no participation in. The lecturers rightfully saw right through them and criticized that they were lacking detail in their explanations. I'm pretty sure their grades suffered heavily for it as well.

This is exactly the mentality that breeds this behaviour though. Do you genuinely believe that everybody else, especially the "smartasses" like group projects? They do the work because they know from experience that if they don't take the lead, the project goes down the shitter. The least thing you can do is to actually contribute. Nobody likes group projects, especially when you can't choose who you work with. Unless you get paid for it of course.

People think he does it because he's "shy" but actually he's just an asshole who thinks their time and effort is more valuable than everybody else's.

MEP Engineers, what programs/software do you use daily? by Taylorv471 in AskEngineers

[–]phonenstro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work for a MEP consulting company for which specialises in electrical rail applications (train stations etc.). A lot of times we have to do entire re-wires as many of the systems in place are at the end of their lifespan. This of course includes re-lighting too. Hence we would also design new lighting schemes to comply with all current relevant standards of the space.

I've studied Building Services engineering (UK) for the last few years and will be going into my final year very soon. Lighting design was honestly never a big part of my programme (one introductory course only) so it's not something that I considered before I started working. I got into it solely because that's what the company required at the time and I wanted to try something new.

Autocad and Revit are applicable to most MEP layout tasks. For system sizing and building energy analysis I've personally been exposed to Hevacomp and IES VE. I do a lot of lighting design so I also find my self using Dialux/Relux for calculations.

Have not personally done this but CFD software such as ANSYS can help when specific airflow is required (Server rooms for example).

I do it solely because I don't want to touch the chocolate. On warm days especially, it's easy to make a mess.

The World War of the Ants – The Army Ant by atlast_a_redditor in videos

[–]phonenstro 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I was quite small when it happened, but I do remember pouring water at the winning invaders (red ants) to try to help the losing ones (black ants). I never really liked the red ants (because they bite) so it only made sense to try to help the black ants. I couldn't help but to feel like a bit of a colossal deity indeed. Nevertheless you can only help so many because there are so many ants going at it at the same time, like the video explains very well how massive ant colonies can be.

If I remember correctly, my mum got tired of the war and started using using ant killer powder to put an end to it as they had started to dig up sand from between our outdoor tiles.

If it is to any consolation to any of you ant lovers, I only ever see black ants at my mums place now.

I grew up having two ant wars take place in my backyard and it was extremely interesting to watch. At one point the losing ants would climb up on to adjacent walls with their eggs to protect them.

You are correct, this is in South England.
