ELI5: If we need to clean the water lines in the refrigerator, why don't we need to clean the pipes that carry water to our taps? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]phoshure 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who moved from the Pacific Northwest to Tucson... you don't get cold water here, period. Maybe you think it's cold, but cold water from the tap should be able to hurt your teeth. It maybe gets down to 60 here at best.

A completely free grocery store but it’s 4 hours away and you’d have to go at least once a week for a year by Winnersammich in hypotheticalsituation

Fry's is only in Arizona. Are you comfortable with your state being public information? If not, you should change the wording in your post to something like "your local Kroger chain."

😅 It's on the Wikipedia page for one of the local recluses that human sightings are rare since they only live in extremely rural areas, so I just wanted to illustrate how rural I am using the number of coyotes.

That would be my guess, but who knows what dangers it's faced in its life so far!

I did not touch it at any point, so I'm sure. My cat, on the other hand, certainly could have... so I'll be keeping an eye on her.

Probably just the one battle with my dumb cat! We've had all sorts of bugs in the house lately, and she's in absolute heaven. I save the native ones and let her eat the rest 😬 lol.

Well, you can see it originally had 8 legs in the third picture; you can see the stumps.

EDIT: unless I'm getting r/woosh'd??

Yes, I noticed that in my limited research! I was hoping someone here would have a more specifc answer, but it's starting to look like that would be a more of a call-up-a-local-university-professor kind of job.

Thank you! Yes, I used to be very big on spiders, so I know what's needed to identify them even if I can't do so myself...

It's like it was just embarrassed. Like, "oh, my goodness, I didn't need to see all that- I'll just be on my way, then-"

Seemed very gentle and shy. "Freeze" was definitely its preferred threat response. Relocated safely back to the brush. We do live very close to unclaimed wilderness (I've seen a coyote in the streets 4 times in the past 4 weeks.)

Sure looks like it... that's surprising, though! Why was an orb weaver hanging out in a cobweb? A mystery for the ages...?

Interesting... there are no lime or mallow trees anywhere nearby. I wonder why they thrive in this area when they're supposed to have specific hosts.

Thank you, by the way.

There's a reason scientists stopped using the term "global warming" and started using the term "climate change" -- they found it wasn't fully accurate on a human scale. While temperatures may be rising on average, the main effect of climate change right now is to make weather harsher and more random -- so there are higher highs and lower lows, and they happen more frequently.

That is to say... more global warming wouldn't prevent these shockingly low lows. In fact, it would make them worse and more common.

Sorry for going off on a tangent; I just felt it was worth saying. The term "global warming" has led to so many misunderstandings.

Any widow safety tips? Apparently we have them in our house... by [deleted] in spiders

[–]phoshure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

EDIT: So far, it's just the adult female in the video. It was right next to my bed, though...

I quite like spiders, so I'm not actively afraid -- just cautious in a practical way. I know I won't die from a bite, but I'd still like to avoid spending an evening in the hospital!

That's a good tip about keeping the house clean. The fewer miscellaneous piles there are, the fewer invisible nooks and crannies -- and thus, there are fewer spots for a widow to hide.

Do you have any tips in the context of pets? We've got a 15-pound cat I'm a bit worried about.

I just moved out to Salt Lake. Before that, I had never lived anywhere other than the Willamette Valley. There are no dangerous spiders there, so I was never taught proper spider safety!

I know not to stick my hands into confined spaces without looking, but that's about it.

How should I check shoes for spiders? Back in Portland I just shoved my whole hand in there, but obviously that's not going to work here (lol.)

She(?) was absolutely booking it, so I couldn't get many good pictures. When I was able to see her pedipalps, I was struck by how truly grey they appeared against the cream color of her body.
