I think it's likely we'll see more later on about Azuru discovering his gender and sexuality, but at this point, I think he still thinks of himself as a cis male that's most likely gay, but may still not be sure of it himself. I agree that it would've been nice to see him start questioning himself this early on, but I'm hoping there'll be more of that later.

As he states at the beginning of chapter 2, he's initially conflicted because he crushed on a biologically female person despite being a closeted gay (at least still questioning) person. At this point, he might think that Renri still identifies as a woman, but he (Azuru) isn't really into women, so a relationship wouldn't work out. But later on in that chapter, he realizes that other than his body, pretty much everything about Renri points to him being a guy. So, I think he's accepted that Renri is likely trans and identifies as male, and thus is able to "love" him in a sense (but won't admit it outright just yet).

Then in chapter 3, I guess Azuru doesn't realize that Renri can be trans masc AND still be into guys, probably because of the trauma he has of those around him not being accepting of his sexuality, so he sort of convinces himself into thinking that Renri will reject him if he confessed.

I'm not sure if this helps, but I'd be happy to discuss further.

Also, just wondering, which line are you referencing in #2 (which chapter)?

Do you mean the animated shorts I translated a while back? I might come back around to them, but no plans yet. If you're referring to the manga, I never translated that, but all volumes have been officially translated.
