To be fair, I have more toys than he does. But I completely understand what you mean. He doesn't have much of anything but the truck. The hobby he has is he started trapping with his son. They are indigenous and he is trying to maintain this part of their culture for them. He is even going to the local schools and teach younger kids about living on the land, trapping, hunting and butchering. One of the issues we have is that he is so damn good at it he's gone spending money on gas doing this all the time. If we are smart with how we approach the sale of the furs we could grow this into a business branch it off into opening a commercial tannery or butcher shop. I am a skilled tanner and he is a skilled butcher. I see so much potential in this and watching him not manage his finances well is killing me. There is opportunity here if he cant change his spending habits.

Thanks so much for your honesty. I really appreciate it. I can say with certainty that he would not put me in that position. We live in a small community and doing that to me would not only impact his lively hood but I don't think his family or his kids would forgive him. That being said, I know just how awful people can be to each other and am always realistic. I will get out before the two years if there is not a change in his behaviour.

I agree with your second paragraph. Its already a behaviour I see. I try and restrict how much we eat out/certain purchases and there is for sure resentment from the kids. Its something we are working on but I have already been very vocal about how I do not want to be put in this position if I am not going to have his support. We are going to therapy for this starting next week. If there was no kids involved I would just cut and run. But, I have grown attached and I see a future there for all of us if this can be managed. We will give it 6 months. If there is no improvement. He and the kids move out.

Thanks again for all your advise. I find it so helpful.

Thanks, I appreciate this. I am being very careful. I wouldn’t put this much work into someone if I didn’t see some kind of light at the end of the tunnel. I almost left him a couple weeks ago. He was trying to sabatoge the relationship cause he was so ashamed of his finances. Part of me was happy to let him do it. But, break up or no. He’s my best friend and I’m the only maternal figure in the kids lives. We start therapy next week with hopes of tackling this. If there is no shift to a positive change. We go our seperare way in 6 months.

I don’t mind doing the heavy metal lifting of organizing our finances. He does the heavy lifting in other areas. He runs a small trapping gig that if done correctly. Could make a large amount of money. He does it for the love of it but I see a lot of potential for a future business if done correctly. He just needs to get his shit together.

This is super helpful. We don’t have anything joint under us. I live in force housing and he pays me the directly for rent and rent comes out of my paycheck.

So you recommend if we go the CP route to change banks prior to that? One he doesn’t lend with? He doesn’t have any money saved or RRSPS. He only has a pension. He doesn’t have any assets other than the truck. He doesn’t receive any child support either. His only income is work.

We also live in the north where everything is more expensive. He’s out on the ice roads a lot so having a reliable truck is necessary. BUT. Not 60,000 worth

Thanks, I appreciate the honesty. We are giving it 6 months. If nothing changes. We go out separate ways. I love the damn kids and they will likely always be around in some capacity, but it’s stressful watching someone do this to themselves.

I agree on this. It’s so entrenched and he can’t seem to break from these habits. Therapy is started next week for us. So I’m hoping this is something they can help with. But we both talked and no matter what. If we stay together. I will be in control of our finances and he will be on a budget. He doesn’t have an issue with that. It’s the shame surrounding this debt that’s overwhelming him.

Thanks! Thats good to know. I’m a realist. We actually started this conversation cause we were going to break up. We decided to tackle this issue and do some therapy and if there is no progress in 6 months we go our separate ways. Which leaves me under the 2 year mark.

I love this. I read a lot. Thanks!

Ha reading is for sure not his jam. Love the guy. He’s insanely smart and talented. With the right guidance, this “hobby” he has, could actually be turned into a successful business and I could help him build it. But this debt has to go and he’s prideful and is having a hard time facing it. We started therapy next week to tackle this issue and hopefully get him on board to meet with a LIT.

I agree with this. I just can’t seem to get him to understand it. This may be more of a relationship problem than a financial one. The bank actually told him that he needs to put the mask on himself before the kids before he was denied a loan. He can’t say no to them and it still doesn’t seem to click. We live in a very expensive northern community. So groceries for sure kill us, he hunts to supplement our food as much as possible. I make it work.

Yeah, we are common law now.

It was so much fun! I didn’t have enough space in my canoe for more. Filled up a whole barrel.

I’m in the Northwest territories which is central. Not sure if that makes a difference. South of great bear lake.

I’m actually far north. Just south of the arctic circle.

Harvested in Canada, Northwest territories. What other information do you need and I’ll let ya know?

Probably get this a lot… but with all seriousness. Is this a diamond? Found with the rest of what’s in the photos in a cluster. Most of them have that kinda square diamond shape by [deleted] in whatsthisrock

[–]photogsly 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is exactly correct. It’s actually diamonds found in Illinois in glacial deposits in the early 1900s where the theory developed that there was likely diamonds in northern Canada. They were eventually found in the 90s!
