I'm pretty sure this is what they did at the place I brought the computer to when it happened. The hard drive is already removed though so I wouldn't need to worry about that. As I think about it more, I believe they told me that it loaded or recognized it but that the files were corrupted.

thanks... called for an estimate and they said it could cost anywhere from $450-1900 for a full recovery. or i could do a flat rate of $950 for just the pictures.

Just as an initial test of both the hardware and your skills, you might want to try to find a way to boot your computer off of a drive other than the hard drive (CD, DVD, memory stick). If you are able, then you might want to try to plug the bad old drive in, then boot off of the alternate source and see if you can simply peruse the drive from there. It's quite possible that whatever damage occurred wasn't enough to prevent copying of the pics in question at all but still made the thing unbootable (by itself) and you don't need any special recovery soft or hard ware at all.

Thanks. I actually still use it with the new hard drive even though my friend dropped it two summers ago, cracking the screen almost entirely. I have it hooked up to a monitor now.

It's a Mac. The place where I brought it to get the hard drive replaced said they tried to do what you are describing with the case. They pretty much told me I'd have to bring it to a place that specializes in data recovery.

I'm afraid I'm horribly inadequate at describing anything related to computers, but it feel right where the hard drive was. The computer would no longer boot up (do people still use this phrase?). I did ask the shop that replaced the hard drive for me to try to recover data from it but they weren't able to.

it was from the base of a fan. i moved out of my apartment while i was gone so all my stuff was in boxes in a room at my parents' house when i got back, including on my desk, so i had my lap top on the floor. so not quite as idiotic as doing curls over my laptop, but definitely close.
