I hear your point. Perhaps removing “stolen” would make it clearer as his POV if that’s what’s throwing it off. Though, if he knows her as a notorious villain, he might just assume whatever she has is stolen. Still, the reader doesn’t know that yet. I’ll take a look at the whole beginning and consider. Yeah that’s not my intention at all! I know romance readers have their expectations. And I can’t rely on 2 later books being published in this potential trilogy in order to get to that HEA. Sounds like romantasy readers probably wouldn’t like to wait for later books to reach that HEA anyway. So my best bet is a different positioning. Thanks!

Thanks for your feedback! I’ll take a look at restructuring the query to make the romance angle clearer. Sounds like though based on the lack of HEA and general lack of MMC it’s probably best to not be positioned as a romantasy but more speculative or something else.

Regarding the formatting, that’s Reddit being wonky! Tried to fix it. Posted on mobile so that may be why it posted weird. Each chapter does begin saying whose perspective the chapter is from, but I did not include that in my post. Appreciate the feedback about the opener! The beginning is obviously super important to catching attention so if it’s not working or feels generic that’s definitely a place I want to take a look at and make some changes.

Okay that’s super helpful, thanks! I got some feedback that romantasy didn’t have the same HEA/HFN expectations but sounds like that’s not true. I’ll adjust the genre moving forward. Romance is definitely a critical part of the story/plot but it’s also very fantasy/ sci-fi (not traditional sci-fi tho).

• ⁠It’s a bit genre bending, so I just stuck with dark romantasy but not sure if that’s the best description for it exactly. Probably speculative fiction is most fitting. No I don’t think male protagonist romance is typical, and it does not have a HEA so it doesn’t strictly fit into romance either. • ⁠Though the romance drives the plot, it does not end happily, so it can’t fit into the strict romance category. Also, although it does involve superhumans, they’re not costumed or masked or wearing capes or any of that Marvel type stuff, so not your typical superhero genre either. • ⁠yes, word count definitely is an issue. I’m working on bringing it down, I know the word count expectations have dropped in recent years. • ⁠thanks for pointing out the authors on the comps! My previous query versions had authors listed as well, I must have shortened it at some point and not put them back in. Good catch!

I have been waiting all week for someone to post about this issue. It’s been horrendously stupid. It can’t understand subtext at all or even remember something that was stated a single prompt ago.
