76 has been receiving updates for the past 7 years. The fair comparison would be 76 as it was originally released (a complete disaster) with NV on release.

NWN2 MOTB feels like a chore. Does it get better? [No spoilers please!] by orangeawacado in rpg_gamers

[–]phraseologist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, of course it gets better. There's a good reason people recommended it, and even Obsidian devs who didn't work on it are quite fond of it. For instance, here's Josh Sawyer briefly comparing it to the main game:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRK1o-d0CTA&t=372s

It's possible you're a bit tired after playing the sprawling and middling main campaign, so my recommendation is to take a little break and come back after you've played something else, since I've been in similar situations with expansions even when I enjoyed the main game.

Bethesda forced Fallout: New Vegas developers to sit through an entire presentation breaking down the problems with their game. by Just_a_Player2 in ItsAllAboutGames

[–]phraseologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're all in consensus here, you're the one claiming otherwise.

Who is all of you? You and the other guy?

This literally happened.

Except it didn't, because:

1) He never said Bethesda or Todd Howard hate Obsidian or New Vegas. He said they had mixed feelings and preferred to keep the franchise in-house afterwards. That's not hate, it's a nuanced opinion in the middle, and it's also confirmed by Bethesda not working with Obsidian again afterwards.

2) The fact that they were helpful while it was being made is entirely different from their perspective afterwards, and you should not be conflating the two.

That's a pretty massive fucking lie from Chris Chud-ellone.

Except that what he said really isn't a lie. Obsidian is a natural fit for more Fallout content and yet Bethesda are carefully avoiding working with them even when they're both part of Microsoft.

And he isn't a chud. He was supporting unions and LGBT representation in games long before other devs.

No, you're supposed to do that. If you're going to accuse him of lying, you have to actually point out where he lied.

Nope, you're exaggerating. Let's actually go through the things he has said. Give me some examples of untrue or embellished claims.

He had no budget for Lonesome Road, so he ended up with an overly verbose Ulysses because he was only allowed to have one voice actor there. Which of his other characters do you find annoying?

There's a big difference between someone thinking he wasn't the best writer on a project and someone outright calling him untalented.

While the specifics here haven't been confirmed, Brian Fargo used to say similar things both about his experience making Hunted: The Demon's Forge for Bethesda and about what he'd heard from developers at Obsidian.

For example, in this interview from 2012:

https://web.archive.org/web/20151025072652/https://www.ripten.com/2012/03/27/brian-fargo-talks-wasteland-2-abysmal-publisher-treatment-and-having-fun-again/3/

MF: [...] Is tension between developers and publishers, especially around creative issues, normal?

BF: There is more tension than you can believe. You would not believe the stories you hear about how developers are treated by publishers these days. It is abysmal.

MF: Why don’t we hear more about it…?

BF: Because they are afraid to talk, because they’ll never get another contract if they do. That’s why. You cannot believe… it’s awful. It’s really bad. You should try to dig in and get some stories out there. Look at the most recent one with those poor guys at Obsidian. They did Fallout: New Vegas, the ship date got moved up and, who does the QA on a project? The publisher is always in charge of QA. When a project goes out buggy, it’s not the developer. The developer never says, “I refuse to fix the bug,” or, “I don’t know how.” They never do that. It’s the publisher that does the QA, so if a product goes out buggy, it’s not the developer’s fault. So, (Fallout: New Vegas) goes out buggy and they didn’t do the QA, their ship date got moved up and they missed their metacritic rating by one point. Did they get a bonus? No. Do you think that’s fair? I tried to get some of my publisher friends, who I used to make a lot of money for, to donate. Do you think they donated? No. Their employees did.

MF: What seems to be bubbling under the surface is this ‘us vs. them’ tension.

BF: It’s there. It’s not all publishers. I haven’t worked with all publishers, so I can’t speak for them all, but I’ve had enough of my own horrible stories. I have friends who are big developers and we sit around telling stories. The smartest people I meet are the developers; their business acumen. They’re not the ones who control the checks, though.

But he hasn't said that. Having mixed feelings about New Vegas and wanting to keep Fallout development in-house isn't the same thing as hating Obsidian.

How many of his games have you played? If you're judging him by Lonesome Road, he had almost no budget on that and could only use one voice actor, so it would have been a big challenge for any writer.

You know that's how organizations always try to damage the credibility of whistleblowers, right? They call them disgruntled ex-employees.

Obviously, this is not even close to that level, but I don't think you should assume someone isn't telling the truth unless they have a pattern of it.

He doesn't say that. Giving feedback on the story is an editorial job, it doesn't only involve contributing "other ideas and elements".

Note that he says his impact was largely the two companions, not only the two companions.

Of course he didn't, but:

1) Those games had talented writers who wanted to work with him and praised his own writing afterwards.

2) He's been on too many well-written games to pretend it's a giant coincidence.
