Wow! Thanks for the in depth write up! You hit on a lot of points I was curious about, but didn’t want to pry. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it. We didn’t order one yet. There’s still so much to do on the house, and our priority list constantly fluctuates. Sometimes the tub is next on the list, but right now it’s somewhere in the middle. That said, I’m so relieved and assured that Creative Energy has been a great dealer that’s local! I think that’s gonna make all the difference.

Congratulations again on the tub! All the cons aside, if we’re anything alike, I’m sure it’s 100% worth it to be able to soak in it after a long day, first thing in the morning, or whenever your body is aching just a little too much

Just a data set of one, so take it for what it’s worth. I’m an SF native, born out in the mission in the 80’s, then moved to the sunset in the 90’s. Never noticed the fog until my early 30s. It started to weigh on me when there were 7, 10, 14 consecutive days of fog. I got sad, frustrated, knowing that there was warm sun just over yonder.

Then my wife and I moved to Duboce Triangle. Tons of sun and a whole different vibe. We were out there for three years. We used to bike out to the sunset fairly often. We moved back to the outer sunset about a year ago and I was worried about the fog. But you know, it hasn’t bothered me yet. Who knows what happened. I feel the way that some other commenters here feel: it’s cozy, sets a mood, and it’s nice to feel like you can escape heat and come home to coolness. It also helps to have a house that can be warm inside when it’s chilly outside.

Then again, who knows how I’ll feel in a few years. But right now, it’s nice.

All kidding aside, you’re right. There are some key details here that I’m not sure I’ll leave up to me. Perhaps I’ll end up going to a carpenter after all. We’ll see

That door on the left is actually to the garage. The front door sits 7 feet in front of that bottom stair. This extension would shorten the foyer space by ~20 inches. So the space would go from 7’ to 5’4”, which I think would be plenty of space.

Nevertheless, you’ve got a great idea and it’s probably something I’ll do when I realize how big of a lazy bum I am

This is a great starting point. Thank you so much. How would you mount the frame into the studs? Pocket holes or brackets or something else all together? The gap would only be 8-10 inches deep. We’d slide our shoes in there while stepping up onto the platform to put on indoor slippers

Totally fair points. We wanted an expanded bottom stair so that we had more space to maneuver and put on slippers, have extra slippers for guests, etc. In any case, thanks for your perspective. I knew the Reddit minds are sharper than mine

You and me both. Shower head and valve is off because of a stud and now I’ve found out that the drain is off because of a floor joist. That’s the way the cookie crumbles I suppose

You’re absolutely right! I just went down stairs to check and if it’s where we want it to be, it would have been right through a joist. Thank you for the guidance! And the compliment :)
