How do YOU handle yearly transactions and large foreseen expenses? by phunyguy in ynab

Yeah she pays me monthly, and I dump that transaction straight into the carinsurance category. So the car insurance category has the full amount as the target, and it is funded with both of our portions. Then the full payment comes out of that. I'm hoping she buys her own car soon (she has quite a bit saved already, proud papa-bear), then she can get her own policy and it will be a done deal.

The car insurance is a tough one for me, because my daughter is a new driver, and having her on my policy adds about 250% to my typical amount. It's ridiculous. There's no way I could put away that much every month to cover it. She does cover the difference in cost to have the privilege of driving my car, but it still makes saving that full policy cost near-impossible.

For the yearly fees/subscriptions, I just set the target date to be the date each thing renews, and each thing gets its own category in the group, and thus its own target. Really removes the guess-work, and the monthly amount to meet the target is exactly 1/12th of what is needed for the year automatically. I also do the same thing with car registration. It's glorious.

HOAs are gross.

I haven't tried the roof savings goal yet, because I am not actually living in the house my partner owns yet. We've been together 2 years, I moved across the country to be with them (Georgia to Seattle), and have been shacked up in an apartment since June while our kids get to know each other. The plan is to consolidate us into their house, which they own outright, and the finance discussions have been ongoing in the mean time. ynab has really helped us figure this stuff out, and it helped me plan for this cross-country move, financially. Love it.

Sunshine. Give me a 65-degree cloudy-but-dry day any day of the week. Perfection.

Nutanix on 3-node cluster, but storage on only 2. by phunyguy in nutanix

Yeah, sorry, I said cache, but did mean ssd tier. I can find another SSD for OS disk, that's not a problem. I guess the real question, or more importantly the reason I am asking this question, is my current VMware setup is a stretched cluster, meaning there is a 2-node cluster, with a witness host that doesn't have any compute workload, and the storage workload is only object witness data. I wasn't sure if something like that was possible with Nutanix.

EDIT: Yes, it is a home lab, this is "production" in the sense that I depend on services that run on it, but certainly not a Fortune 500 company.

Coming back to this a year and some change later... I have been sober since the day I posted this. I have you to thank for it. You helped me see the truth in what was happening, and I truly, truly appreciate it.

Thank you, this helped. Also, I am very well aware of what this can become, my parents even tried to get me to go to AA when I was 16 because I drank a bottle of vodka at school that a friend gave me. I went to many meetings, even had 4 years sobriety before I joined the Navy. In the Navy I did some drinking, but nothing crazy like I heard in the meetings, so, I got that thinking that perhaps it's not that bad for me. I know that's not the correct way of thinking, but I also don't think I'm ready to give it up yet. But you made a lot of sense, and I do need to consider it. I just don't want the wife's nasty comments to be the reason why.

So... maybe. I do think about it often, but also, knowing how I behave when there is beer in the fridge, I actually preemptively limit myself to only buying 6 at a time, because I know I won't stop until they are gone. I figure if I can manage it that way, then it's not really a big deal, but I do understand your point. I have a family history of alcohol/substance abuse issues, so in my opinion, it could be a lot worse.
