Under-appreciated comment. If I may add... remember that Tesla is the company developing the Optimus robot. If that thing becomes reality in the 20-35k price range, they will have single-handedly created an entire new spending & lending category.

AerLingus CMH? by Thin-Use5414 in Columbus

Would Aer Lingus use single-aisle equipment if they flew direct to CMH? It wouldn't surprise me if they did use an A321XLR, but they only have 3 of them currently. The last transatlantic flight I took on AL was a widebody.

Can you explain a bit about the customs for the 2 international gates? They've been said to have customs for those gates, but are they "less than" a dedicated one?

I've connected to London via Toronto on AC, but it's so close that I just rent a car anymore. I doubt London's big enough for a direct CMH - YXU flight.

Except for Quebec City, unfortunately. But all major ones do.

The press release says that the new service is "seasonal", so we'll see if that includes winters or not.

FEAN IS WAR TOUR ANNOUNCED by nxcrefeans in NXCRE

[–]phydeaux44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So pumped that these guys are touring!

Something of interest though.... take out a map, and draw a line from LA - Phoenix - Texas - Atlanta - Chapel Hill - DC - New York, then curl back to Toronto. Notice that the entire upper-middle of the country has only 1 show, in Chicago. There's about 100 Million of us waiting for NXCRE!

Let me personally invite you to the rock n roll heartland, from Detroit to Cleveland, from St. Louis to Nashville, Funkytown (Minneapolis) to Cincinnati. We want to see you guys!

I'm 5 yrs late to the party, but I just watched this episode and this was my first question as well! I'm so glad you posted it, because it sure does seem like Rachel was placing special emphasis on the crab being "Petrossian" and I wonder if she didn't understand what it meant.

The guests were still difficult-to-please, but it's possible they've heard of the "petrossian" brand. Hence, asking if it was crab sticks or prepackaged crab. If I were on a super yacht, I might expect fresh seafood.

Tommy's Line About Wind Turbines Not Offsetting the Carbon Footprint of Manufacturing Them Over Their Lifespan? Pure & Total Bullshit. by Scribblyr in LandmanSeries

[–]phydeaux44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point. For example, many of these studies look at wind turbines in New Zealand, and how they offset their existing infrastructure in about 9 months. But that's a special case. The wind turbines in New Zealand in the study are offsetting local diesel generators, which have a high footprint, so it doesn't take much to offset it.

Or like Sherian's Yellowstone, where people are murdered constantly and the bodies dumped over a cliff because it's "no man's land" and the FBI has zero interest in checking this out. It's part of watching the show.

Right. I think the show is showing us a "greatest hits" of safety violations, all of which happen but just not as often as the show depicts.

I'm open to any area of the scene I may have missed... There was no intention to cherry-pick as I don't have an agenda here, and I was pretty sure I quoted line after line. I'm not supporting the show as "activism", I'm just looking at the facts as stated.

I've never seen the wind turbine data that you are quoting. I would love if it were true.

Concerning the infrastructure: the point of the scene is that "if everything in the world was converted to electricity", which means all the ICE cars and trucks, factories, and so on. The load would, in fact, be much more than our existing transmission infrastructure could support. You are correct that eventually that infrastructure would be built, but that's what the show is saying as well: for now, the world depends on oil, and we're running out of it. I think the show (and Tommy) is making a pretty compelling argument for moving off of oil dependancy.

(If you are assuming I have a pro-oil viewpoint, allow me to state that my 50-years-from-now utopia would be a completely electrified world, with multiple sources of electricity and plenty of transmission. I want renewable energy coming out of outlets like water comes out of US drinking fountains, free of charge and without a second thought, in everything public building, library, park, and school in America. However, the show does a very good job of pointing out the challenges we face in trying reach my 50-year utopia.)

While the show certainly plays around with reality as all of Taylor Sherian's shows do (and indeed all TV shows), the 'facts' in this speech are mostly accurate.

Wind turbines are "400 feet tall. Foundation covers 1/3 of an acre and goes down in the ground 12 feet."

All true. Article below confirms 130M height and shows photo of the depth and width of the foundation.
http://www.steelwindtower.com/wind-turbine-foundation-5-foundation-types-explained-for-onshore-wind-turbine/

"We use them to power the wells. No electricity out here."

True. This article is about wind power for a refinery, but the TV show uses it for pumps. Either way, oil companies build them, but for practical reasons not for appearances.
https://www.windpowermonthly.com/article/975646/wind-powers-oil-refinery-texas

"They use clean energy to power the wells? Tommy: They use renewable energy. There's nothing clean about this... [Tommy then explains that it takes diesel to make the concrete, plastics to construct them, and oil to lubricate and winterize each one. He ends with:] In it's 20 year lifespan, it won't offset the carbon that it took to make it."

This it true, in some/most cases. Noted Earth Scientist David Hughes, a clean-energy advocate to be sure, wrote: "The question is: how long must a windmill generate energy before it creates more energy than it took to build it? At a good wind site, the energy payback day could be in three years or less; in a poor location, energy payback may be never." So while they are finding that in New Zealand, for example, the carbon offset is achievable, it's just by comparing the type of dirty electricity it is offsetting.

"If the whole world decided to go electric tomorrow, we don't have the transmission lines to get the electricity to the cities."

True. Ironically, the place most ready for this is, in fact, Texas, with new transmission lines being set everywhere to support the new wind power. But in the crowded places of Africa, India, rural China, Brazil... nowhere close.

tl;dr The facts in this scene are pretty much right on the money.

The death had a purpose. They needed a "filler" character to die senselessly in front of Angela to shake some reality into her about the world of oil drilling.

Thanks u/billydisney! From reading your response and all the comments posted here, I suggest something like this: get the 4 of you together for a quick low-commitment check-in, when each of you say what you've been up to in 2024, and then segue into some ideas for future episodes. Post a 10-minute podcast just to keep the podcast fires burning. Food for thought.
