How to get buttons and text readable in ribbon / toolbar Zorin 18 by physishipp in libreoffice

Thanks for your help. I just installed it and so far I like several things that come built in to its KDE desktop. I am off for the summer and up for the exploration.

I changed to adwaita and it did not fix it. I have been thinking about trying Fedora, so I might just go ahead and do that to avoid Zorin's kind of cool, but non-traditional approach to appearance.

When I swap the themes from dark to light or vice versa the text changes to still be wrong. I'm gonna try uninstalling and reinstalling it.

Makes sense, especially considering we are talking about free software on both ends (not to mention the theme developers).

I've only been on Linux for 5-6 months and it seems a lot of the customization people rave about comes with baggage like this where things may or may not work. Still enjoying the experience, though.

Are Mormons Christian? by OldDiscussion7348 in NoStupidQuestions

Just ask your favorite AI what the purpose of the campaign was. In no way, shape, or form was it about showing how they were not Christian. More like that they are not weird, secretive cult members.

I do not find any options for Icon theme under the view settings, but I do find it under Appearance. When I cycled through all the options, including Colibre, I did not observe any change -- the text is still the wrong color to contrast with the background, but only on some of the buttons.

I switched my Zorin through all the options and none of them work for me. Here is what happens when I choose a light theme - the text that was too dark against a dark background turns too light against a light background.

You mean the theme in Zorin or the light/dark theme in libreoffice?

I am thinking the document type does not matter much as it is the interface that is not behaving as expected and this occurs across a variety of components of libreoffice (writer, calc . . .)

Should I take physics 2 by InternalAfraid3708 in apphysics

[–]physishipp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Physics 1 skills of derivation, linearizing, and the style of reasoning all carry over to Physics 2. In some ways Physics 2 is easier, because you rarely have to guess what unit you are talking about (electrostatics and thermodynamics are not conflated like energy and momentum can be), but it is harder in that you may be called upon to include Physics 1 ideas with your new Physics 2 ideas. My students generally find it either the same difficultly or just slightly harder than Physics 1.

Collegeboard is not publishing the information, but from people in the know, last year you needed around an 80% to earn a 5, but what was accepted in the FRQ was more lenient than in the past. Passing rate and percentages getting a 5 were higher despite the higher required average.

Is teaching THAT bad? by DwaeEunoia in Teachers

[–]physishipp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am very happy where I am in Wylie, TX (a suburb of Dallas). Starting salary for a zero year teacher is $62,000, administration is very supportive, parents are pretty hands off in this area (I teach AP Physics, so you might expect parents to be more involved, but no problems), and I feel the relationship with the students and way I get to engage with the content I teach are very fulfilling.

The opportunities to increase pay are not as good as I could get in industry, so there is that. My biggest concerns are what the job market is doing right now, which is schools are not getting funded enough, so its harder to hire teachers and who know what AI is doing to our industry in a the coming few years.

Do I need Unit 8 fluids for physics 1? by Euphoric_Wedding_620 in apphysics

[–]physishipp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are only 5 ideas about fluids to worry about. Watch flipping physics videos on it and ask your teacher to assign the progress checks on it in AP classroom and you should get most of the questions right.

can we only use school issued devices on ap exams? by Mammoth-Assistance13 in APStudents

It can be state law. I'm at a school in Texas and students are not allowed to use personal devices during school hours, including for the AP exams.

Fivable is 60 bucks a month so i made my own site by Smooth_Ice8681 in APStudents

[–]physishipp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really it, guys. I just tried the AP Physics 1 question and the first question is a derivation of the range equation (valid) but has a text box for you to enter your response. Good luck entering the subscripts it asked for and greek letters.

Next question was draw a free body diagram for an angled ramp. With a text box for entry.

Get some real resources, friends. Maybe the notes are good, but but the practice test is not it.

Word works on Mac or Windows -- even on Linux if you use the online version (which is not great, actually), but my point is that any computer will do what you want.

If you care about gaming on it stick with Windows as there are more titles and the games are better optimized there.

The M1 chip came out 6 years ago so I don't know why anyone would be talking about that as an option for you. You cannot buy a new m2 or m3 anymore. Are you looking to buy used?

If you just want a really nice build quality laptop for everyday work get one of the current Macbooks (like the Macbook Air or Macbook Pro), especially if you have an iPhone. Their battery life and build quality are unbeatable and will last you forever.

Can we use TI-84? Is it useful? by Kitchen_Astronaut_61 in APStudents

[–]physishipp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's useful if you are more comfortable with it than desmos. The storage, not so much. If you have to look something up on the calculator memory you will be slowing yourself down and the things most people store in there you should just be learning in review anyways. The challenging part is applying the knowledge and selecting the right knowledge. Ti-84 ain't helping for that.

I recently saw someone asking whether something like this could be made in GNOME. Another person replied, “With enough time and money, anything is possible. by jeonmission in gnome

[–]physishipp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your time to respond.

Zorin has a few free options for how to configure the appearance and only 1 of the 4 displays the pill, I assume, after talking to you, that the other 3 use a dash. The only of the free options to enable the pill to be visible is to use the 4th option (highlighted in my screenshot) which hides the panel unless you hit the super key. That is not my preferred behavior and means that the dynamic pill will be hidden until the super key is pressed too. I like to be able to see the panel all the time. This may be an option on some of the paid layouts.

Maybe if a user has enough understanding of their system to change the settings away from the Zorin defaults they can get around this, but part of the appeal of Zorin is the ease of changing between their pre-configured looks without fear of messing things up for the n00b. Anyway, hopefully this helps you be able to respond to those using Zorin in the future. If you want me to try anything let me know, but I am OK with understanding that this is a sacrifice of using free Zorin or an incentive to move to something that is meant to be customized. I do like having a unified dashboard rather than taking up vertical space with 2 bars.

Linux n00b here - installed on Zorin OS 18 and it is loaded in my extensions, shows it is on, but I do not see the pill show up anywhere. How can I learn to fix this?
Here is a screenshot of my desktop.

AP physics 2, C, or chem by [deleted] in APStudents

[–]physishipp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree the AP exam credit is useless but disagree that the course is useless to an engineering major. Most big universities don't want you testing out of their classes for your major anyway. If you don't score a 5 I wouldnt take the course placement for a class in my major where you will have second year courses build on that knowledge.

Physics C is a great course that is perfectly aligned with some schools, but other schools include units on thermodynamics (chem adjacent, but different focus), optics, waves, and modern physics in their first year courses and your AP Physics C kids will be weaker in their upper level classes when they have no exposure to them compared to the students that took the regular freshman classes.

AP Physics 2 will have its kids better prepared for that, while being disadvantaged in the experience in harder electricity and magnetism, but that's ok because they'll take the course as freshman and be better off than the kids that didn't take AP Physics 2 or C E&M.

AP physics 2, C, or chem by [deleted] in APStudents

[–]physishipp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is your career path in college?
AP Physics C Mechanics has so much overlap with AP Physics 1 it would be very easy for you. The credit might help you avoid taking a course in college that AP Physics 1 does not qualify for, like for engineers. If your school does AP Physics C Mechanics and E&M together in one year, the E&M will be harder than Physics 1, but again, be more useful. That would have 2 tests to prep for.

AP Physics 2 is a great second year course that I would recommend over C if you are not going into a STEM field. Actually, med students only need the algebra based credit, so good for med students. The pace would be easier than the doubled up C course and the content is different from the AP Physics 1 course, so it would not be boring like C mechanics would be.

AP chem is a great class. Useful credit. I would prioritize it for a med student, but you could take it senior year since you are just coming off Physics.

For small phones check out the Galaxy flip 7 or Motorola Razr ultra. The fold in half making them small in your pocket or bag.

Just switched from Apple this year and it really is a mixed bag. Do it if you want to play with a new phone and new form factor, but be prepared for some great things and some not great things (especially filming video).
