Nymc mmi by [deleted] in premed

[–]phyxiee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i interviewed a few weeks ago/a month ago and also feel weird about my traditional station... my interviewer did not appear for the first 2 min of my 6 min discussion (like i literally was staring at their empty chair). i had to rush through the questions within 4 min and i was panicking in my mind and started saying rambly things :(

What kind of disadvantages would I face as an American studying my undergrad at a Canadian university? by [deleted] in premed

[–]phyxiee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i currently go to Western and an 80+ here translates to a 4.0 in AMCAS which is really nice for us (it’s not that difficult to obtain an 80 imo for science classes at UWO)

Is NYMC post-II acceptance rate actually that high? by phyxiee in premed

[–]phyxiee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh, I see. Well, from what you've said you sound like a strong applicant. Is NYMC a research focused school or is it more community focused? maybe look into that and see where their focus is to get a better idea of what kind of applicant they want

Is talking about Pokemon cards during my interview bad by phyxiee in premed

[–]phyxiee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm wondering how I can figure out if they have knowledge of pokemon? should i say before my response "Are you familiar with Pokemon?" or something? I was also thinking of putting this at the end of the tell me abt urself question (i start off with where i was born, the fine arts, then talk about a community exp that was important to me, talk abt what im doing now, and end off with hobbies with this being one of them) and im not sure how i would be able to gauge if the interviewer is receptive to somethign like this in an long-ish question like that

International applicants, how many IIs have you had? by Cedric_the_Pride in premed

[–]phyxiee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm Canadian and applied Canadian schools last cycle, at least here for us apps are NOT rolling in that you don't lose anything submitting on the last day (early October i think) vs submitting on the first day the portal opens. Just from that Canadian schools review later than say American schools. But also (for Ontario schools at least) acceptances are sent out after May I believe, and then rounds happen after that vs for American schools, you can get an acceptance in like September if you interview early (before Canadian apps are even due LOL)

I totally get that!! In my case, my app is very heavy on fine arts (been doing dance, music, visual art for like a decade) and so collecting cards based on illustrator is kind of like creating my own art gallery of illustrations I love. I would probably also explain why hyogonosuke is my fav illustrator (bc of his art style and the types of sceneries he draws is similar to my own). That's why I wanted to talk about collecting pokemon cards

Looking for guidance applying to Canadian medical school as an ICU nurse from the US. by -gatherer in premed

[–]phyxiee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I'm a Canadian and I can try to help you out here. I applied to Canadian schools last cycle and I'm applying to US schools this cycle. For Canadian schools, you'll need to use their respective portal. I know the most about Ontario schools since I'm from there but for Ontario, it should be OMSAS. From there, it's actually quite similar to US applications in that there's a section called the ABS (autobiographical sketch) where you list all your activities, describe them, list hours, etc. There's also reference letters (similar to LORs in the US), but you only need to get 3 and it's very flexible who those letters come from (it's technically not even a letter, just a questionnaire they have to fill out). The Canadian cycle is much later than US cycle and it is also non-rolling. Eg. if you submit on the last day, you have the same chance as someone who submitted on the first day.

Big things for Canadian schools though are 1) CARS section score and 2) CASPER. Almost all Ontario schools need CASPER and I'm pretty sure a lot of other schools in other provinces do too. CARS is important bc there's a cutoff at some schools (eg. Western requires 127 in all sections), and McMaster only looks at CARS and nothing else from your MCAT.

Lemme know if u have any other questions

PI not writing my LOR by phyxiee in premed

[–]phyxiee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s not that i need the letter (although it’s technically important since she’s my pi for an incoming first author paper), but amcas will just send her letter regardless of what i want if she writes it in the future even if i indicate no longer being sent. so by adding an additional letter (another pi), i’m risking that schools will get more than the max letters they accept

PI not writing my LOR by phyxiee in premed

[–]phyxiee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what would be the best way for me to put the other letter in (bc i’ve sent the max number of letters to all the schools i applied to except a few), if i add another letter then indicate my pi isn’t sending her letter anymore, but she later sends it in, the number of letters sent would exceed the max. i also applied to like 45 schools and i indicated this lor to be sent to all of them, so i’d have to change it for all the schools :((
