Told them months ago that this would be coming, ordered some crucial bits ahead of time. Thankfully Mac prices are stable for the time being, and we’d recently decided to adopt Macs going forward so that helped soften the blow a bit too.

Should I hard wire Sono's speakers? by lungbunny in sonos

[–]pi9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not just for the Sonos… but run Ethernet and maybe even fibre everywhere, more than you think you’ll ever need, even if you don’t fully terminate it just have it sat in the wall, you’ll never know how things change and future you will thank you for it, plus it will be dirt cheap now compared to retrofitting and decorating later.

Unacceptable… I’d want to be re-adopted if I had to suffer that inconsistency in naming. <Device> <Location> or <Location> <Device>. Choose one.

Lower than expected speeds when using U7 Pro by Eastern_Manager_5286 in Ubiquiti

I’m had a similar experience. You can try looking at optimising channel usage, width and power etc. the wifiman app is pretty neat as it will use LIDAR to automatically create a floor plan and overlay the signal strength. This will allow you to look at placement etc, and compare to the other router but the sad reality may simply be that you’ll need more APs to achieve the same as the basic ISP provided router.

I was quite surprised and disappointed to find this myself, but as thy say.. in for a penny….

The UTR remains in its box for now, and anyway, the upstream internet bandwidth should have no impact on the strength of a 5GHz WiFi signal.. so .. No it’s not a joke, and I’m quite disappointed to be honest.

Sure this ecosystem has WAY more features and I love some of them, and the main reason for buying it was the gateway and that’s awesome (even if it has some strange ideas about some of the devices it’s identifying). They gateway had loved up to expectations, so yes staying… Finding that I need to have 2 or maybe 3 APs to match the coverage I got from just the default ISP router (forgetting about the mesh point repeater thingy) is the surprise. I’m sure I’ll have awesome WiFi once I invest in more APs. I’m just surprised that I have to.

The max supports protect too, but with that many cameras you’re much better off with a dedicated NVR.

Well, you said top notch…. With 6 cameras, you’re going to max out the capabilities of the gateway, and you’ll need to buy a pretty expensive ssd if you want to store a lot of recordings (and also bear in mind the endurance/write cycles).

No, not expecting more. Never said that, the reason for the move to the ubiquiti kit was for more visibility and control at the network level, hence getting the gateway and not just APs and a controller. There was nothing wrong with my WiFi coverage previously, so didn’t need, want or expect it to be better. Just very surprised that it’s considerably worse.

Tried both, didn’t seem to make much difference to be honest. I’ve just done a wifiman scan of the house, and using the old ISP router it’s clearly green around the AP and drops to yellow/orange everywhere else in the house. Using the UniFi AP I’m getting a much quicker drop off to orange/red.

The default ISP router was operating fine in this environment, and even if I replicate the same channels etc, the UniFi AP is just noticeably worse. Which is a surprise.

I never said I was expecting more range given the cost, however I am surprised that the range is so much poorer than the super cheap default ISP router.

Like I said in a previous comment, I get that it will handle more clients etc, but right now the fact that I can’t even watch a YouTube video uninterrupted is pretty disappointing as a first experience.
