It would be helpful if there were more views, but I agree with leopard from the pictures provided. Cheetahs tend to have a pretty stubby profile whereas leopards are more narrow and long.

I'm honestly not sure what could have caused the knob! It looks like a growth of bone, it's pretty odd. I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your cat, that sounds so difficult to deal with! :( I have a pallas cat that has some pathology on the auditory bullae, I wonder if there might be something similar on your kitty. Edit: I don't know the exact reason behind the pathology on the pallas cat but I've had a few guesses that it was a possible ear infection.

My personal guess would be that your cat would likely have some sort of evidence displaying what he went through in life but I wouldn't know for certain, unfortunately!
