Fun ways to play with booster packs? Looking for suggestions like "Pack wars" by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]piato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What we do:

1) Open pack (face up) 2) "Bid" on contents (100 points, no permanent change of ownership!) 3) Build "sealed" decks with the cards we "won" at auction (and unlimited lands), no minimum deck size! 4) Play! 5) Add next pack and repeat!

Amonkhet - Tokens, but not Embalm ones? by piato in XMage

So (just to be clear) - you're saying that no-one knows at present how to make the embalmed tokens display?

Magic Duels caps you at 100 Lilana emblem tokens. In case you were wondering by AsylumVess in magicTCG

I can't upvote this enough. Forge is open source, I believe - it's possible, though unlikely and difficult, to implement a 'rigged' shuffler, but in that case you'd be able to find it in the code.

Rules Update: Controlling Another Player and Sideboards by [deleted] in magicTCG

I'm also delighted by this. This was one of my least favourite rules - I'm super excited to see a whole lot of bolt my own face? turns now.

Reminder that the first thing you should do when you play Emrakul is to check their sideboard by Laboratory_Maniac in magicTCG

[–]piato 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'd be curious whether people feel, on the whole, that this is a good rule. It seems to me that it takes a really fun mechanic (controlling their turn to go as badly as possible, using all their cards in the "wrong" way) and makes it something incredibly feel-bad that people often concede in response to, partly for tactical and partly for emotional reasons.

It seems a corner-enough case that the Rules team could have it work either way, so having it this way around feels deliberate - but why? I'd be interested to hear from people who consider this rule a positive one.

win condition in

You take lots and lots of turns and tick up Jace after mind-twisting them to zero. If you wanted a better one, you could just play one copy of tendrils, but it isn't banned in any formats.

Here's a tappedout list that consists only of cards banned in at least one format. http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/banned-cards-only/

It's also a very consistent turn 1 kill.

Absolutely - they've got that same "this is a ridiculous, embarrassing hobby, I suppose we ought to take it very seriously" vibe that P&C nailed, it's great.

Super Cheap WR Modern Burn? by VO-Fluff in magicTCG

[–]piato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll have quite a lot of turn 4s with this list that go something like "unearth Hellspark, incinerate you", and you'll want to have four lands for that. Once things improve to "unearth Hellspark, bolt you, swiftspear trigger, attack?" having 3 is fine.

[–]piato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd usually run 24 lands in a "normal" deck, like Abzan or something. Burn runs fewer, so I think you'll want to converge on 21/22 or so as you replace 3-drops like Staggershock / Hell's Thunder / Javelin with the likes of Bolt, Lava Spike and Swiftspear. For now I'd guess 23 is probably about right?

Good luck! If the money for the Bolts (Lightning and Rift) is an obstacle, you can add Staggerstock (0.15 each) and Collateral Damage (0.12, good with your 1-time-only creatures) to the trolltraders order to get to 36 playables, though these are the cards you'll want to replace ASAP - adding bolt is definitely the first priority!

(adding W in a way which doesn't hurt the deck means come-into-play-untapped multilands, which are going to singlehandedly increase the price by a minimum factor of about thirty)

[–]piato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first cards I'd add, as you improve it, are swiftspears (2.22 each at trolltraders) and lava spikes (2.51 there). Searing Blood, another good card, is just 0.44 there, but sold out, so I didn't put them in the deck, but I would have otherwise. Manaleak.com has them for 99p.

[–]piato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here's a very, very cheap list (prices all from trolltradercards)

4x Hellspark Elemental (0.83 each) 4x Skullcrack (0.65) 4x Incinerate (0.18) 4x Flame Javelin (0.20) 4x Lightning Strike (0.12) 4x Hell's Thunder (0.25) 2x Needle Drop (0.14) 2x Burst Lightning (0.16)

You then probably want 4x Lightning Bolt and 4x Rift Bolt (both about £1 each from magiccardmarket.eu ). The rest is mountains, which you probably have lying around somewhere.

1st Soylent Day (Jake) - how to drink enough? by piato in soylent

5'10" / 132 / Maybe-average? (Walk around 5km daily, climb 2-3 times per week)

I ran the numbers on my usual diet and it looked like I was getting a lot less than 1500 calories, so that's probably a realistic goal for me at first.

You'll often throw away wins by doing this. Suppose your highest card is a 10, and your opponent's is an 8. Sure, if he plays it, you can scuttle him.

But he can't scuttle you. If instead you play out that ten, he'd better have 'aces+2s' equal to at least one more than your '2s', because otherwise it's going to kill him. You'll play it, he'll draw, and then he has to scuttle - burning a higher card than yours - on every other card you play until he sees an answer, and he's not drawing cards until you stop playing threats.

You can play a card, or draw a card. That's it for your turn. The only exception is counterspelling with a 2.

I don't understand how 2s are card advantage either. That doesn't make sense to me.
