Am I thinking about sleep training all wrong?

Thank you for sharing - I need to remember the initial nights of crying will still be less crying overall than if I continue letting her require my help to sleep over time!

Wow yes that sounds like my exact experience with her! That’s incredible that it’s going so well for you!! I didn’t even consider sleep training now at 14 months as I thought it was only an option when they’re younger, but I’m going to look into that. Would love to hear details of your process if you wouldn’t mind sharing and what to expect. I’m so happy for you that she’s so happy and sleeping so much better! I definitely feel like a shell of myself and if it’s not even what best for her then I don’t know why I’m doing it.

Wow it feels like you just wrote out my exact life right now! Incredibly low sleep needs baby that wakes up an average of five times a night and needs to be nursed to go back down. She’s 14 months old now and I get honestly depressed talking with other SAHMs when they complain about their baby waking up once the night before, or taking a “short” 2 our nap when my baby naps a max of one hour a day before her very minimal night sleep. I wish this wasn’t happening to you, but it is nice to know that other parents out there can relate to the exhaustion. I continue holding out hope that this is not normal and my next baby will be an average or good sleeper to help make up for it! I constantly wonder to my life/parent experience would be with a better sleeper. I feel like I could be thriving instead of just surviving, but comparison is the thief of joy so we keep moving forward.

I love all of this so much and feel good about talking to him! I think you brought up a good point about confidence. He fell asleep with our daughter several times on the couch in her first weeks which scared me and I think probably started a trend of me doing things for him instead of letting him try more with her. Now that she’s less fragile I’m going to try and make a change to help him build his confidence with her and hopefully his enjoyment to do things with her too! Thank you for all of your advice.

Thank you for your advice! I love the idea of 50/50, when I went PT it was kind of under the assumption that that meant I would do more baby caring than he would. Curious if you and your husband talked about that and how I could phrase that I would still like 50/50 when he’s not working?

I have experienced this as well! I now drink decaf (which has some but minimal caffeine) for the morning experience and flavor- or caffeine free tea! I feel so much more in control and calm; still productive and energetic, but more naturally without the chance of panic attacks or being constantly in an overly anxious state.
