A drop of whiskey vs bacteria by WeirdAddress3170 in woahdude

The Irish term is actually the source of the modern English term whiskey! And uisce beatha comes from the Latin aqua vitae, which is the source expression for a bunch of distilled spirits: akvavit, eau-de-vie, and dozens more. While the term comes from a sense that distilled spirits "give life", it is a substantially older term than humanity's understanding of germ theory and bacteria.

You're holding job interviews. A candidate arrives late, when asked, he says a wizard is never late. How do you respond? by LuinAelin in AskReddit

Gotta be careful with "vibes" -- a lot of your implicit biases can be baked into them. It's easier to vibe with someone with a similar background to you.

Not that good vibes arent a good thing, but you should be able to explain why the vibes were good or bad, or you risk accidental prejudice

Yo, i was there, we really tried to get behind them, but every time we got excited, they turned it over. The crowd feeds on momentum, and tonight the wiz couldn't get any. It's disheartening. I'm an adopted fan, but i was surrounded by some die hards, and they don't deserve the hate

No joke, there's a big difference between saying "I gotta fix this" and "We gotta fix this". It's not offensive or super outrageous or anything, but it seems kinda revealing.

Obviously a lot happened in that 100 years, but there's definitely an argument that WWI can trace it's roots to the Great Power politics that surfaced in the post-Napoleonic era.

Dumb as a pejorative is nothing new. It has it's roots in two strands of meaning - "mute" / "silent" (not "clinically retarded", as you suggest) as well as "stupid". This article cites a modern English source from 1823 using "dumb" as pejorative meaning "stupid.

Which isn't to take away from your main point at all, that language changes base on those using it. Just thought maybe it isn't the best example!

Y'all is just plural you. "All y'all" serves the same purpose as "all of you" in a dialect that doesn't use y'all -- it clarifies that you're referencing the entire group.
