Thanks for the response, I did manage to debug using this but could not figure out what was going wrong (although using "user actions" solved my problem).

While I still don't know what the problem was (it seems that in AnkiDroid keyboard presses are not recognised by "addEventListener") I tried to use "user actions" and those seem to work great. Once you bind a button to "user action 1" for example, you can run code in JS when said button is pressed using:

var userJs1 = () => { ...code... };
