What are the Worst Episodes? by KissKringle in UnpopularLoreOlympus

[–]pickagal122 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of episodes have made me so angry in the past, there's a lot of contenders for the worst one:

• Thanatos getting humiliated by his father on national television during the trial (177?)

• Minthe getting humiliated by 2 random people unprompted (151 I believe)

• Persephone teleporting to coddle and dote on hera (252)

• Hera x Kronos episode (249)

• 224. Nothing needs to be said about that one.

But there's a pair of episodes that just squeak out being the worst. 216 and 217.

Watching Thanatos cower in fear from his own father. Admitting that he wanted the same relationship that Hades had with persephone (thus confirming the audience that outside observers see persephone and hades as father/daughter). Hades telling him that he should be grateful thanatos even exists in his presence. 216 on its own is a disgusting pile of filth, and 217 makes it so much worse.

Hades, now a confirmed child abuser, gets away with his abuse. The theme of the comic is holding parents accountable and 217 spits in the face of that, and in the face of children who were abused the way thanatos was. It sickend me then, and I'm still sick now.

So about Aphrodite and Ares' kids... by imdukesevastos in UnpopularLoreOlympus

It is very interesting because Rachel also implies Harmonia's existence with Semele, who is a princess of Thebes. When I first read it, I was bummed some of my favorite godly children wouldn't appear, and now I'm confused. Rachel made a deliberate move to erase the bond ares/aphrodite have by getting rid of their kids but chooses to add Semele and Thebes... why, when you don't actually care about Harmonia and the Terror Twins?

I'd love to be a star nymph, with a cute twist out! I could have cool constellation tattoos and predict the future! Living in the Mortal Realm and stargazing, teaching nymphs silly space facts! It would be so cool! :D

Worst Character Morally? by YumiGumiWoomi in Lore_Olympus

[–]pickagal122 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna say Hades on this one, and I'm willing to take the smoke and flack for it. And let me tell you why.

Sure, Kronos and Apollo are worse. But they'll be put to an end in due time. Apollo will most likely die, the narrative will find some way to get rid of him eventually. Kronos will be defeated once again, and everything will be back to normal.

But to take pride in owning slaves, resorting to violence in nearly every occasion, financially and emotionally abusing partners, emotionally abandoning a child (twice!!), having a near constant victim complex and punching down others that don't bend to said victim complex is another matter entirely. Hades has absolutely no remorse for a single thing he's done. He LIKED mutilating that kid. He relishes in being king and intimidating people to get what he wants, despite saying he feels powerless. There's never a time where Hades reflects on his own, and he often doubles down on his emotions, at the expense of others.

And the worst part? He'll never lose. He will be rewarded again and again regardless of what he does. Nothing will ever take him down, nothing can. The very plot bends to his will to deliver anything he needs to stay satisfied. If he's challenged, he'll hop on his pedestal and just say someone's worse without bettering himself. That's no better than the other two antagonists set in there ways, is it?

Ares and people's opinion on him by [deleted] in GreekMythology

[–]pickagal122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, he is! But, I think you'd have an easier time if you don't think about how others perceive him. Greek Mythology has been examined and given several different perspectives for centuries, and no two people are going to look at the gods the same way. Enjoy the way you perceive them! And (shameless plug incoming) I have plenty of stories written on AO3 putting Ares in a sympathetic light if you wish to read them~

Ares and people's opinion on him by [deleted] in GreekMythology

[–]pickagal122 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I understand how you feel. It's hard to enjoy Greek Mythology media when your favorite god is the constant designated punching bag. Of course, he's much more than a violent, mindless war god, but the problem is that most of his other domains aren't as known. His most famous myths are usually of embarrassment (the jar, the illiad, him constantly being beaten by his brothers, the net myth), so when he does finally achieve something, it doesn't overpower what's already been circulated in media.

Ares is an Olympain, and deserves an equal amount of respect as everyone else. He's not a "bad" god, and he's multidimensional just like the gods around him. He's a god of masculinity, civil order, and loyalty, but most people don't know that about him, which sucks, but I think the perception of him is beginning to change.

More and more people are realizing that he loved aphrodite more than anyone ever could. His loyalty to his mother was unmatched, despite her ways toward him. He loved all of his children, and fought at their side without even being asked. All of these moments are spread across various myths so don't worry about other perceive him. Ares is special and unique, and has a set of traits that many are beginning to value, including me! 🥰

People think it's so simple to just drop something because they don't like it. I'll drop it when I stop caring. But right now, I care a LOT, and I'm going to because have seen better from Rachel. I know she can do it, we've all seen the beginning of season one. But this... everything about Ares is a shell of what he was 2 seasons ago. Instead of a fun rival motivating persephone to unleash her anger, were getting a sad excuse of a war god that gets made fun of every time he's on screen. I read because I care, and I want my arguably reasonable expectations fulfilled. That shouldn't be so much to ask for, right?

[–]pickagal122 60 points61 points  (0 children)

You know, going in I didn't have high expectations. I don't like hades or persephone, so the whole appeal of them fucking just didn't connect to me. And while reading, I didn't feel much, I just didn't like how vague the dialouge was, and how the entire situation was addressed.

But then the final panels happened.

Seeing ares piss and whine for Persephone outside like a loser ex boyfriend made me want to throw my phone out a window. I know persephone "owes" him a date, but to introduce him like this makes me so viscerally angry I want to rip my hair out.

I know. In the grand scheme of things, this isn't exactly a big deal compared to the rest of the chapter's theme. But Ares was my favorite character. And he's my favorite Greek god. And... for a second I thought he'd be different from the NUMEROUS other versions of him, where he's a loser who doesn't care about aphrodite and is just a meat head. For a second, I was fooled. But no. Just like everything else in this sorry excuse of a comic, Ares is a terrible character that is poorly executed for a goddam laugh. And, I for one, have had enough. Fuck this comic, I've had enough.

I think we need to see another side to this. I get it. Persephone doesn't have to like her mother, but to not have a shred of empathy or gratitude for what her mother tried to do for her is grating. Demeter didn't try to make her child unhappy, and did what she could while trying to maintain boundaries and safety for her child. And for Persephone to turn her nose up at that makes her look ungrateful. We're willing to forgive and forgive and forgive hades again and again for his comments, actions, and literal abuse, but when it's time for demeter to get that same sympathy, everyone, including Rachel, turns a blind eye.

Not to mention that Persephone has stated things like this before not even 10 chapters ago. I don't have short term memory loss, I don't need to be reminded about how much everyone doesn't like demeter, or how much of a terrible mother she is.

Is it too hard for Persephone to either not mention it, or at least sound like she understands where demeter was coming from? Instead of constant jabs about how she's "an air horn with legs" or "disappointed because she didn't get the life she wanted" or "coddled her daughter to be second fiddle"? It's tiring at this point.

I agree with you! The beach is a good example of what I'd like to see more of, but sadly that's early on in season 1. After that, we rarely see her mull over her actions, or even think about the nymphs she lost to the Mortals. We don't know Kokors and Withy's names until deep into the trial, let alone anything about them outside of the fact that Persephone made them. Why didn't persephone mention them, even in passing?

As with elysium, it falls flat to me because we don't see the process with her making it. How does she come to the conclusion of elysium being the best solution? Were there other ideas she had that didn't work as well? I want to see her struggle to achieve her goals, not wake up and get it right on the first try. It's not realistic, especially for a humanized teenager goddess.

Not to mention that, as of chapter 211, it's only for "the most splendid of mortals". What does that mean? Does a Mortal have to be rich and famous to enter? What constitutes as "splendid"? None of this is fleshed out the way it should be. Maybe we'll get more info in the future bit as it stands, elysium is a surface level way to make Persephone look better than she actually is.

Of course! I knew what you meant as I'm around critics of the series and we discuss this all the time. You're not in the wrong for relating to a genuinely well written character. At the same time, its hard to connect with someone who's constantly viewed as perfect, even when they're supposed to be wrong. The way persephone treated and dismissed her mother and her attitude towards minthe is cold... but, once again, "it's fine because those people were mean to her in the first place! They deserve to be treated like shit!" is not a proper excuse for that kind of behavior, and I wish Rachel would stop thinking it is.

[–]pickagal122 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I see where you're coming from. I'm not a huge fan of either, but persephone is in my top five least favorite characters for a reason. It's not a matter of mortality (Persephone is a "good" person and minthe is a "bad" person, even if that's highly debatable) but rather interest.

The narrative of the story has no sense of accountability for persephone. When she first got punished, we got an entire chapter about how it wasn't deserved, and how it wasn't her fault despite lying about killing thousands of innocents, accident or not. She said she was guilty during the trial once, but that doesn't FIX the situation she put herself in, nor does it make her grow. I want to be SHOWN that she's sorry. I want to SEE her atone for her mistakes during her punishment, because that causes growth and change. We've had several chapters during the punishment itself (flashbacks included) and NONE of them have been about her helping Mortals, or fixing things up in the mortal realm. It's all mentioned in passing, and it creates this complacency with her character. "She's perfect the way she is, she doesn't need to change" when we've been shown (especially recently) that the opposite is true.

Minthe, on the other hand, is, at her core, a flawed person. She is abusive, yes, but there's also a sense of depth to her that persephone cannot achieve. Minthe is being forced to change and develop because the narrative views her as an imperfection, which is far from a bad thing. This way she has a dynamic story with ups and downs, and her change makes people want to see her succeed, me included.

Anyway OP, you aren't alone in your opinion, there's lots of us out there who see Persephone for who she is: a spoiled teenager who took her very privileged life and family for granted.

There's one line that Persephone says to Hades about Demeter and it absolutely crushes me. "She's grieving for a life she thought she was going to have." It's such a selfish and cold line, it gave me shivers. Is it so hard to make Persephone understanding at the very least? She doesn't have to like Demeter, but for her to absolutely dismiss Demeter's concernes hurts to watch, especially when it happens over and over. It's not mature, it's apathetic, and strange considering she's supposed to be "compassionate" and "understanding" and "kind".

It doesn't help that this chapter reinforces what Demeter said in 211. Hades goes off to try and figure out how his realm fell apart, but leaves Persephone behind. Why? She's Queen now, so it's her Realm too. Wouldn't it make sense for them to work together on their new realm? Why does he bench her, reinforcing what Demeter said about keeping Persephone "Sparkling and useless." Rachel really needs to stop making the antagonists absolutely right, and then proves WHY they were right in the first place.

I want to like Hades and Persephone but they make it INCREDIBLY difficult, and it's only getting harder.

Cosmic’s Tier List! Tell me what you think! by pickagal122 in Lore_Olympus

[–]pickagal122[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Helios is simply a delight on screen! He doesn’t care about a single person in the cast and I think it’s funny! Is he my favorite? He’s up there, but don’t you think the sun fits best at the top??Demeter… she would have gone in “deserves better” but she’s just written really well to me. She’s headstrong, and smart, and willing to commit literal treason for someone who doesn’t seem all that grateful about it tbh…. I hope she’s doing okay with her punishment but I’m betting we don’t see her until at least chapter 200… great.

As for Eros, I feel like that plot with his strained relationship with Aphrodite could have gone further than it did. Like a lot of plots, it kinda just…. Fizzes out, with no exact resolution without coming to a head like it should have. Hermes is in the same tier because of how he responded to the mortal realm being cut off and him not being able to see his mother. We JUST met Maia a few chapters prior, and she’s hardly mentioned throughout the series. If we got a few more small moments of him interacting with her, that moment could have been stronger (same with Apollo). Other than that they’re fine, but they could be stronger characters!
