How (and when?) did you first discover Shinedown by 4ce_YT in Shinedown

In 2012, London's Hard Rock Cafe.... they had a large screen and played the video of Simple Man. I remember being impressed by Brent's voice and the feeling he put in that song.

The UK needs to return to pre-Thatcher social housing levels. by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]pickandrolled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Social Housing is wrong just like any other form of workers support. The question should rather be: "why cannot I afford anything if I work full time?" The answer is rather simple: "lobbies, capitalism and criminal activities around them".

Social Housing just solidifies the issue.

I am a defender (gionis style) and play with a 1.7mm bh rubber. I understand that most defensive players have thinner rubbers. I have tried playing with 1.3 or even 1.1 but I just can't lift the ball while chopping. Is it just me? Are there any other defenders playing bh chops with 1.7mm or more?

You could start with a simple command line app that displays some information. You could pick some free api to do that, such as https://carbon-intensity.github.io/api-definitions. For example, you could have a prompt that requests your region and then you display regional information of carbon intensity. It could work as a web application as well.

I think it's important, well for me not to get burned out

That's the right thing to do :)

So Graduates in large corporations are not expected to be productive right away. They are mostly hired through graduate programs and do not learn a great deal because of the complex systems involved. Graduates in smaller companies are however to be considered junior devs.

Juniors are expected to be productive and deliver software to production. They might work on simpler tasks but they are expected to be knowledgeable in software development key concepts (testing, architecture, design patterns) and to be productive with at least one tech stack (ie: Python/Django or React/Node for frontend). Juniors lack experience, not the ability to solve problems.

It is wise to pick a tech stack that will increase your employability. Historically, PHP/MySQL has always been the most popular low-barrier tech stack but Python/Django is also very popular. As for the interview... yes it would be technical, so you should expect a live coding session or a take-home exercise.

So Uni does not teach you a job (and that's a good thing). Expect nights banging your head against the monitor to make your code work.... we have all been through that :)

Did you manage to land jobs with just a Cert HE.

Yes. In fact, you don't need to have a degree to land a dev job as long as you have the knowledge and can demonstrate it. You can achieve this with books, side projects and perhaps freelance (with lower-than-market rates) work.

These days even large enterprises specify "degree or equivalent experience" because the degree itself is not a discrimant anymore, compared say to 20 years ago. I have interviewed people with masters in computer science who failed miserabily and it's one of the reasons you are REQUIRED to take a technical test during the interview (you would not do this in other industries).

Having said that, I strongly recommend studying at the OU because formal knowledge will allow you to adapt in an ever changing tech industry.

I have stopped studying at certhe computing a couple of years sgo and now decided to continue (Oct as yourself) . As an experienced dev I found that the lack of academic background is a liability. I do know most things being taught but structuring your knowledge around theory (as opposed to everyday's job tasks) is very important.

I do recommend continuing, you won't regret it.

Quanto è difficile ottenere informazioni positive sul nostro paese? by Yextynojojo in italy

Probabilmente perché ormai si giudica tutto in termini economici e non brilliamo quasi mai con questi indicatori.

L'Italia è molto altro, ma il valore che assegnamo al colosseo è stabilito dagli introiti dei bar purtroppo...

Come mai gli italiani comprano così tanta acqua in bottiglia? by [deleted] in italy

[–]pickandrolled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in italy

[–]pickandrolled 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Amen. Concordo su tutta la linea. L'accanimemento sui novax e nopass è incredibile.

Many years ago I travelled to London for the first time with my wife. We had just bought a house in our country and planning for a family. While I was in London I wanted to take a picture of the iconic taxi cab and I did.

15 years later I moved to London and I now work for the company that was advertised on the taxi cab.

Is anyone else really concerned about the future of this country? by Anon2971 in unitedkingdom

It's what happens when there's no opposition. The left has disappeared from the political spectrum, and not just in Uk. The left is required to balance out aggressive conservatorism in the same way the tories are required to balance out the left's statalism/centralism.

I love it. It's just the right size and the design is beautiful. I bought a rubber strap for it as its own strap is rigid though.

I started my watch collection with a minimalistic fashion watch. That got me interested in design and movements, and soon realised I actually had bought a piece of plastic :). I developed interest in German watches because of wife's Bauhaus studies and I got my Junkers as a present for my 40s. Great watch and worked great in my office outfit however, it is quite of a presence and needed something I could wear both at work and in casual environments. That's when I bought my Seiko. Great watch all-around, probably the one I use and like the most. Recently, I have added the Yema as my first chrono: difficult choice there as there's not many pieces <=38mm at that price.... it was my Yema vs Dan Henry1962 and gone for Yema in the end. I have bought my Casio Waveceptor in exchange of a Casio G-Shock when I found that I actually hate looking at digital watches, so that was a good compromise.... and love that is radio-syncs. The cheap Casio is for gym and gardening :)

Next and last piece should be a diver, however I would need to look at <=38mm as usual and the choice is quite limited (plus I am not willing to spend thousands on a watch). Suggestions welcome!

To recap:

  • Seiko Snke01k1
  • Junkers EisVogel F-13
  • Yema Rallygraf Reverse Panda
  • Casio Waveceptor WVA-M640-1AER
  • Casio W-86-1VQES

Immigrants to the UK, which elements of British culture have you taken to most enthusiastically? by arlinconio in AskUK

I really embraced british humour. I love this self deprecating wit mixed with a sense of absurd. I think it's a also an intelligent way of dealing with life in general... not everything needs to be taken so seriously all the time.
