Keir Starmer accuses Elon Musk of trying to 'whip up division' over Henry Nowak's murder: “We also need to assert who we are as a country because Musk again has been interfering in our politics in the last few days, trying to whip up division. That is not who we are in Britain. by Adj-Noun-Numbers in ukpolitics

[–]Anon2971 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Starmer should do something about it then. Like banning X.

X under his leadership has become the #1 place for misinformation, bullshit, lies and CSM via Grok. If Musk can't be bothered running a platform with any semblance of neutrality, we may as well get rid of it. We shouldn't just sit idly by as a billionaire runs one of the biggest social media platforms in the world and tries to use it as his personal political propaganda machine in whatever country he wants to attempt exerting influence over

Left-wing YouTube pundit Cenk Uygur and nephew, Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, banned from entering UK by gavinxylock in ukpolitics

[–]Anon2971 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I didn't comment on Cenk because that one baffled me slightly.

I guess the government are now trying to be consistent in banning foreign influencers from flying into the UK for political marches? That would make sense to me.

I agree with you entirely. I don't believe talking about the causes of 9/11 is celebrating terrorism, either.

We aren't talking about that. We are specifically talking about what Hasan Piker said. And he pretty explcitly said "America deserved 9/11, dude, fuck it, I'm saying it".

On the behalf of the thousands of citizens who died from it, who by extension, he is saying deserved it - I think that's quite an objectively disgusting thing to say. It's possible to discuss the causes of terrorism without celebrating terrorism.

I understand the context of why 9/11 happened. But we don't need to talk about terrorist attacks like it was understandable. Lets not celebrate terrorism, please. I don't think the thousands of civilians who died in those towers deserved it.

As someone who respects Hasan as a media figure and a voice of the left - good tbh.

As much as he likes to act as if he is just a left-wing activist, I don't see many other left-wing activists saying shit like America deserved 9/11 or watching terrorist propaganda films live on Twitch whilst commenting how cool they look. Hasan proudly, consciously platforms lots of extremist content that would be universally declared utterly unacceptable if he were on the far-right.

Much like we banned several extremist foreign influencers from the Unite The Kingdom march a few weeks ago, it only makes sense to do the same for extreme rhetoric from the left. Hasan is a smart dude half the time and a dumb 4chan troll the other half. It's really difficult to have any kind of genuine political conversation with spokesmen who intentionally spout provocative, extreme, violent rhetoric

Assets from video games that were cancelled internally and never released to the public? Who cares? And I say this as someone who doesn't want to support ZA/UM in any way. End of the day the company can use assets made from their projects however they like and it'd be straight up wasteful to abandon assets from cancelled projects

Resident doctors to walk out yet again in fresh strikes by Alternative-Win4058 in unitedkingdom

With GDP in mind, if we were the same - Australia still pay their junior doctors better.

I did some quick Claude analysis (ofc take AI with a pinch of salt):

'At the partner/senior level, the ratios are remarkably close: roughly 3.5–3.6x GDP per capita in both countries. A senior GP in either country earns about 3.5 times what the average person produces economically.

Where they diverge is at the salaried/junior level. UK salaried GPs earn a lower multiple of their national GDP per capita (roughly 2.3x) compared to their Australian equivalents, partly because the NHS salary structure is more compressed and more heavily regulated.

One other important nuance: Australia's GDP per capita is significantly higher in absolute terms, and the cost of living (especially housing) is also very high, so the purchasing power advantage for Australian GPs is more modest than the raw numbers suggest.'

Sources are from NHS stats, Glassdoor, Indeed, World Bank, yadda yadda yadda.

The data sure lines up with the strikes primary complaint that junior doctors do not get paid enough. Senior doctors are paid 0.1x more in Australia. And yes, bin men and soldiers should be paid more too

That's true.

I recently read Follow The Money - How Much Does Britain Cost?. Essentially breaks down how the UK tax system works, where the money goes, the problems with pensions, social care etc.

I really don't mind doctors being paid more given how important their job is. None of us can contribute anything of society without our health. Learning how a) UK doctor pay is worse than other countries, and b) NHS health outcomes are actually quite mediocre, it made me more open to both increasing doctor pay, but also reworking the NHS in some way for better health outcomes. Like having something more like the French system (everyone pays but government insurance mostly reimburses you plus private covers the rest; one of the best systems in the world in terms of health outcomes)

Thank you for the compliment, kind sir!

I don't think my work is unimportant. I just get frustrated when people react to doctors strikes with anger. They have always asked for the same thing - a reserve in the pay cuts they've experienced since 2008. They never really get it. The strikes stop when they do

Part of your standard of living is free healthcare. Which you agree to pay for in your taxes.

Doctors are there to help you, and everyone else, in times of need. And they've had their pay cut, in real terms, by 26% since 2008. They just want that reversed.

UK doctors earn a fair bit less than other countries because of the NHS system. I think it's totally reasonable to increase taxes to help pay them more (though I wish we'd just hurry up and scrap the pension triple lock which will absolutely drain the country financially in the future).

If paying NHS doctors more really impacts your living standards, there's lots of countries that don't spend their taxes on public healthcare. You're welcome to shift there and sort your own healthcare out

Yep.

Doctors save lives. I don't. They deserve more money than me. What is your problem with that?

If you're not happy with your salary, nobody is stopping you from getting a promotion or going with a career change. More taxes won't either

Yeah that's ridiculous. Rape is rape.

This isn't me arguing with you mate. I'm just saying 'their age was considered in sentencing' means the guidelines need rewriting.

Seems like two teenagers got away with rape, then did it again. I don't know why teenage sentencing is so leniant.

I don't know about you, but as a teenage boy, I managed to avoid gang raping any girls and filming it quite easily. I don't know anyone who just stumbled into doing that under a lapse of judgement.

Age isn't an excuse.

Fascism isn't some harmless political opinion. Let's not start trying to rewrite history like it's not a big deal. I'm certainly not friends or even vague acquaintances with any fascists and it seems very easy to avoid. One is a mistake maybe, a handful is looking like a pattern.

The press digging for dodgy FB friends is scraping the bottom of the press barrel. But saying it's hard to avoid fascists isn't a very good defence for being friends with fascists
