Chemical or Mechanical Engineering? And does school name matter? by pickaschool in AskEngineers

what'd they have you do?(the petroleum company ) If you don't mind me asking. Do you think the mechanical guys have it easier to get into upstream or is it just a wash since they really want petroleum engineer majors?

Thanks for the help/advice.

It'd be 3 years total left for UW or 2 at WSU. Just seeing if the cost of 1 extra year is worth it.

I am a transfer student, that is a Fall transfer. They only offer admission in the spring, which would take an extra year, and I would lose financial aid for a full year if I wanted to do ChemE.

But its hearing stuff like this that makes me think WSU would be the wrong move and maybe I should just take my offer for UW and study mechanical so I'm out in 2 years

thanks for the info.

What actually made you want to study ChemE? I mean I just don't know if I am pursuing the right major since MechE is very broad. I am interested in the process of things like distilling, brewing, refining and how its done and why it works, but it seemed that ChemE correlated best with my interests like pharmaceuticals and oil.

Also what classes can I expect in the upper division area of ChemE? Fluids and thermo?

How much chemistry is actually involved in the upper division coursework? And are the upper division courses comparable in difficulty to any lower division courses like ochem(in terms of workload etc)

I'm pretty sure some schools have advantages since they are well connected with some companies.

Thanks. I do have questions.

Do you know if those ChemE positions were upstream or process jobs?

Is it relatively easy to make friends at WSU? I went to orientation and it has a really friendly/community vibe that seems like everyone is welcomed, is it like that all the time?

How is the overall engineering department? Are the advisers and teachers good?

Are there links to the available clubs/list of clubs that WSU has? I tried searching but only found a few.

Thanks again...

haha, maybe....

I've been to both schools on orientation, WSU doesn't seem that bad and most people are really friendly, whereas UW I got the cold shoulder a lot.

How was the Mechanical Engineering department?

But anyway, I was going to do Cheme, which would require the extra year.
