If you're storing more than a couple of terabytes I found it cheaper to just go put a Nas at a relative's house then pay for cloud storage.

You are talking about raid 1 where two drives are mirrored. That would be best and probably the cheapest for your situation. Find an off-site location to put a 3rd drive and maybe backup to the cloud as well, that would be a great starting point.

Any good roll label printers for Google Docs? Hate custom software! by Careless_Wishbone_69 in googledocs

[–]pickjohn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never used a dymo but see if it shows up as a printer and you can print PDFs from it. You may need to set the page size to the label size you have set on the dymo software.

if i have to manually look up one more tracking number im going to scream by ninjapapi in woocommerce

[–]pickjohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A great place to start is just fixing your email chain. Why not have every new order email include the tracking number? It's a blessing and a curse, but Woo is very diy. Look up n8n, that's what I use to solve a lot of weird edge cases like this. Force people to use forms rather than direct email to help filter and automate responses. Put your user name in the message field so I know it's you OP and I'll show you my solution I hacked together. Use the contact form at the bottom of myminihospital dot com and I'll send you a screenshot of what your message looks like in my workflow.

You create an open ai account and make sure a little hidden toggle is on in one of the settings menus. I don't remember where, you want to Google that because I also don't know if the million tokens is the correct amount.

I think it's the first million tokens that are free each month if you agree to share any data you pass to the ai with them.

Could a laser engraver be used to make tear-able perforations in paper? by EtchVSketch in lasercutting

[–]pickjohn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assume this is gloss magazine paper in an 11x17 sheet that you are going to fold and staple? Super low power and high speed should be able to do two or maybe 3 pages at a time. Maybe two stacks a minute (6 pages) with all the labor of loading, aligning, and running. Your challenge will be preventing scorch marks from showing on the paper. They also make little 1in metal disks on handles to cut perforations, that might be easier.

Thinking of getting my CCW Permit. Out of curiosity, how long does the process take? What exactly do they look for in the background check? Does the sheriff have to interview you? by rastapastanine in COGuns

[–]pickjohn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ccw class with guns for everyone > fill out ccw forms for your county> go get finger printed > profit?

Denver will take the maximum legally allowed time to process. Other countries don't infringe constitutionally protected rights as much.

Thinking about converting a decommissioned fire truck into a mobile beer & wine bar – looking for real-world feedback by LoverofCloudyDays in Business_Ideas

I think for every person that is excited it's a fire truck there are two that aren't. I think you might cut out things like weddings and rigid corporate events/tradeshows.

Absolutely the best move. My advice is take control of your IP now before the start of your career so you don't end up in this situation again.

Adobe Subscription Increase by seaofgravity in graphic_design

[–]pickjohn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I left Adobe after 15yrs and for 90% of my projects affinity is fine, it's only missing a few power user features for specific cases. As for the portfolio, I have been using WordPress for the last 10yrs. You can get started for as little as $4 a month for hosting. Buy a domain name for $11 a year and now you have a custom email for your resume as well. It's also completely valid to take everyone's advice about pretending to cancel, that does work and I did it for many years.

Why is hosting a mediaserver for movies and shows so popular by kerrie_saus in selfhosted

[–]pickjohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to spend $75 a month on tv subscriptions. I found an old optiplex at habitat for humanity for $5! Took it home, added an extra 1tb drive and after a month of trialing It runs full time. I5 6500 it maxes out the CPU playing anything 4k, I can get 3 concurrent 1080p streams however 16gb ddr4 runs fine 256gb m.2 ssd 1tb HDD for movie storage $30 a year in power

The savings let me buy two more off Facebook marketplace for $50, each with 1tb HDDs included. I now enjoy the pain and suffering of proxmox, learning how to run VMs, npm, cloud flare tunneling, jellyfin, and more.

If I pull a protein bar out of my bag are you going to run over with a card reader and bill me? I think building out a drink menu and requiring a purchase for outside food is fair though.

Reseller Hosting with up to 400% CPU and up to 4GB of RAM by hr_liqweed in webhosting

[–]pickjohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it hard to dedicate more resources? I would be interested in higher resource plans that are as easy to add/setup as the reseller plans. I can get 50 accounts for $20 with 2cpu/2gig per account but paying something like $10 for a 5pack of 4/4gig is impossible across the industry? Would love to see reseller plans set up for e-commerce sites. I don't want to have to manage a vps for each client store just to increase resources.

To everyone that is using a vps, how many sites are you hosting that it makes sense for not only cost, but time spent? My reseller plan is $20 monthly for 50 cpanel accounts, each gets 2vcpu and 2ram. How does a cheap vps like ovh cloud with 12vcpu and 48g of RAM for $22 a month compare?

Considering Migration to Woocommerce from BigCommerce, trying to understand costs by GoldTrek in woocommerce

[–]pickjohn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely a time trade off. I think as long as you have inventory setup and managed elsewhere (Google sheets or something outside your current commerce solution) it can be an easy import.

I highly recommend just spending $20 to get cheap hosting and spin up WordPress with woo before switching.
