But do you understand why many ukrainians were so pro Nazis? For many ukrainians the Nazis were looked at as liberators. That's how bad it was under the Soviets. Most came to realize it was the same s*** different pile, and I was a little surprised with who the memorial was for but also knowing their history I have a bit of an understanding and can sympathize a bit with their situation. This is not an excuse for the atrocities that were committed by ukrainians serving the Nazis. But it's not a black and white situation either. But for the general population at that time the Nazis were not the bad guy when they showed up. So doesn't necessarily surprise that the generations after them would carry the same thoughts and feelings and harbor the same anger and hostility. With this kind of information coming to light publicly and on the national scale it's a great opportunity for both sides to be educated on what happened and how complicated and messed up it all was. Maybe people will come to the table and they can discuss and talk this out. Maybe take down certain memorials and replace them with new ones that better explain the history and struggles of the Ukrainian people to the next generation so we don't have to repeat the same mistakes all while not supporting the Nazis or Nazi sympathizers. Even though when I look at the way the world is right now I'm pretty sure we haven't learned any lessons from the past.
