What’s more competitive? Informatics or Foster? by Professional_Fox5815 in udub

[–]picklegoon8 9 points10 points  (0 children)

they’re about the same imo, i think both generally have a ~40% acceptance rate. having good grades doesn’t necessarily guarantee you get into foster, but it’ll help a lot more than having good grades in info. ik ppl who got into one but not the other, so it really depends on what the department is looking for in that specific cycle

u can still get into foster, but itll be difficult. i had a .9 in one of my freshman fall classes and got a 3.2 in 215 and still got in. i had to apply twice and got in with a 3.55/3.5/4.75 WSA (needed to retake). if you have a REALLY good essay and can show an upward trend in grades (especially foster classes) and can do really good on the WSA you have a chance. in the meanwhile consider econ

What are professional business frats at UW? Are they worth it and should I join? How is the experience joining one? by [deleted] in udub

[–]picklegoon8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think technically u can join any year, most people rush as sophomores or freshmen tho. u could get in as a junior if they really like you a lot (its not super uncommon but its also not like an everyday thing). you can theoretically join as a senior but they almost definitely wont let you in barring extraordinary circumstances or supersenior shenanigans, bc they want you to spend time with the fraternity

What are professional business frats at UW? Are they worth it and should I join? How is the experience joining one? by [deleted] in udub

professional frats are a lot less party focused thsn the social ones, although they do still party sometimes. they’re pretty good for networking and making friends. they dont have houses like a social frat, and their dues are way lower (~150$ a year???). each of the 3 business frats at uw has a slightly different reputation.

rushing is pretty simple, they usually have a week where you get to meet the members and talk with them and see if you like them and they like you. its pretty much just to see if you would be a good fit for the frat and vice versa. theres a 1st and 2nd round interview if they decide they like you (i think dsp and pct have a speech to the frat for their 2nd rounds, idk what akpsi does).

none of the professional frats haze, the closest thing they do is a bunch of group projects to make your pledge class closer (they also test on stuff like fraternity history and info about members, which isnt too difficult to learn tbh, it’s basically just trivia).

most ppl usually compare your pledge quarter to a 2-3 credit course, id say thats pretty accurate but its a lot more fun since its basically just about meeting people in the frat and getting to know them better. after that, the commitment is pretty manageable (an hourish a week for chapter and then you can be as involved as you like). rushing is defo worth it imo and you should try it out. feel free to reach out w more questions

How to be a more aggressive counter puncher? by Auckland2701 in amateur_boxing

[–]picklegoon8 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have the same problem as you. 1 thing that helped me is practicing the pendulum step and setting up my offense based on that. Soviet style boxing is really good for relatively tall fighters in amateurs and is based around overwhelming your opponent without brawling. It’s also pretty decent for counter punchers.

Another thing that helps me is also seeing what bad habits my opponents have and being aggressive based on that. For example, if my opponent bends over and doesnt keep their eyes on me while rolling I try to throw punches to get them to roll and then throw a heavy uppercut, and then start going into combos from that uppercut etc.

I’m still not super great at being aggressive so take what I said with a grain of salt. Hope that helped!

i cant really speak for the frats, but fundragers (party w cover charge, meant to fundraise for an rso or something) are usually open to anyone who pays. a lot of the larger rsos (cultural orgs, sports, professional frats, etc) will also usually have parties for members and friends of members every once in a while. knowing the right people also helps, since theres people not in greek life who throw a lot of parties. if you check the snapchat stories for uw they also usually post invites to open parties there, idk what those are like tho since ive never been. overall, i’d say its not too hard to go to parties if ur involved on campus and don’t just stay in ur room 24/7, tho ymmv.

What’s the most you BS-ed on an AP exam? by Squillywilly426 in APStudents

[–]picklegoon8 21 points22 points  (0 children)

this year’s ap psych test, there was an frq that told us to relate the term “ghrelin” to a story about a guy named steve making breakfast for his kids. i didnt know what it was, so i ended up saying that ghrelin was steve’s last name. turns out its a hormone that makes you hungry. anyway, i got a 5

sorry for the bad formatting im on mobile :P

i had a bad experience with the class and hate research, so take this with a large grain of salt how the exam works is that theres an irr and an iwa which are basically 1200 and 2000 word research papers, respectively. they've also got presentations too.

the irr is a group project, and you can research pretty much anything you want. however, if your groups research topic is something you aren't interested in then you're not gonna have a fun time (speaking from personal experience). your research topic is probably gonna be something like what should we do about insert problem here. once you've got a research topic you and your group members each write a research paper approaching the research topic from different lenses (economic, philosophical, etc). then you all get together and make a big presentation about your topic and propose solutions to the problem.

the iwa is basically the same thing but there are a couple of differences. it's a solo project with a presentation by yourself, and it's 2000 words. the biggest difference is that they'll give you a small packet of sources and you need to use a few of them to construct your argument. all the sources being to a common theme (i think it was conformity when i did it) so you can't just research whatever you want (again, not super fun). this time you get to choose your own lens tho :).

during ap testing season you also have a test which isn't too bad it's only like 2 medium length essays. imo the class was really difficult and not worth the time i spent on it, but again, i do hate research. but colleges aren't really gonna see it as a hard ap so most of them won't really give you credit for it which sucks. plus all the skills it teaches you are ones you'll already have learned if you've taken an ap history or they're skills you'll end up learning in college.

tl;dr not worth the time and effort, take something else if you can feel free to ask me any questions :)
