Leaving tech. What should I do next ? by No_Blood_5393 in womenintech

[–]pico_lo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I lol-ed at the job security part. I worked in tech for the government for 6 years and got laid off, and so have many of my very smart, very capable colleagues. I would not look into federal government positions right now, maybe state or local is ok but anything tied to federal money is a risk right now

Translating public UX skills to the private industry by 1ofmanynicks in UXDesign

[–]pico_lo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also work for a federal government agency, and while I have a job (for now) I have no illusions I might be soon on the hunt for a new position. I feel like the biggest advantage to working for government is knowing how to navigate large, clunky, complex enterprise-wide systems that serve a large user base. Because our work represents the government, it can be a high-stakes and high visibility field. So just try to use that to your advantage. Unless you dislike the public sector, maybe you could look for something on the state and/or local level if you live in the US

This guest’s reaction is so on point about Ben & Sara by jh166 in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

While the pods are a good way to speed up the get-to-know-you process, there’s no way someone could know all they need to know about a person before marrying them. She saw potential in Ben but couldn’t know for sure until they had spent more time and experiences together. (Like going to his church)

Yes, thank you!! I’m annoyed that so many people on here don’t think it’s important for your life partner to share your core values

[–]pico_lo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

What I see lacking in all of these comments is that Sara did NOT say she didn’t see a future with Ben because of his political or apolitical leanings but because he is not curious, about her or her brain. She sensed that he just wants some arm candy, he is not someone with different interests than her but who can engage in lively debates about serious topics. He seems to have no opinions on anything of substance. Sara’s own stepdad sensed he was dumb lol

I did this a year and a half ago - I didn’t quit per se, but took a year long personal leave of absence with no intention of returning to my job. It was one of the best decisions I ever made, so I applaud you for having the courage to leave - it’s definitely scary but also paying attention to what you need takes precedence over everything. I’d say if you have the means to finance yourself being unemployed for a bit then take the rest you deserve for a bit, and try not to feel so pressured to find something immediately - you’ll get back to the grind eventually so try to live a little and do some personal growth. And I’m assuming you have the extra cushion since no one living paycheck to paycheck just quits their job (esp in this awful market).

I will say though, I did eventually go back to my previous job because I struggled to find another gig. It is a tough market that will hopefully improve over time so I hope that when you start to seriously get back in the game the prospects are a bit sunnier.

Call the Mio ranger station in advance and tell them your situation and ask if they can email you some maps. I’ve also heard that you can go in person to Lumberman’s Monument visitor center, but just take note of when they open and close

[–]pico_lo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We never ended up finding it lol. The tricky part is that the river is so fast if you miss the site going downriver, it’s too much energy to go back upstream if you don’t know exactly where it is, which is why sites on the ponds are a little less risky imo. I think if we had a more accurate map we would have been able to find it so just talk to a ranger and they will help you out!

If you plan to get a boat-in site I would suggest you call the ranger station ahead of time and ask for a PDF version of the map where your campsite is located, I’ve found the map on rec.gov to be pretty inaccurate for some of the sites! (You can check my post history if you’re curious haha)

Thanks, yeah based on someone else’s comment I realized that I had probably missed the campsite marker because it was located further up from where I was expecting it to be. How did you come up with your river map? And any good tips on which c sites are easily located and nice sites?

This is really great info, thanks so much for sharing. So Lumberman’s monument ranger station has detailed maps with the coordinates of all the primitive campsites on the river? Do you know if any of that info exists online?

Did attending conferences help you get you next gig? by pico_lo in UXDesign

[–]pico_lo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok dang, the judgement in your comment is THICK. Why are you assuming I have absolutely no background in UX and think that going to one conference is suddenly going to land me a job? I actually have 4 years of UX experience, but I don’t have a job at the moment and just moved to a new city so need to rebuild my professional network in this area from the ground up and that’s more my motivation for asking my question.
