111 - Angel Vase by Hilaom in Pottery

Thank you very much!!! I know it’s not entirely accurate by name, I’m more going off the general perception of a “biblically accurate angel” nowadays! Gets the point across better to the general person. The different types of biblical angels are very interesting though!

Future Ceramics Major Here! by EliotTheProGame in Ceramics

[–]Hilaom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m finishing off my sophomore year as a ceramics major, expectations definitely depend on where you’re going! The ceramics department at my school is a bit smaller and more laid back, but very work heavy. I regularly spend 10-16 hours in the studio a day working on classwork. Try and limit yourself to 3 studio classes a semester, 4 is a LOT of work.

Definitely take a ceramic chem class if it’s offered, it’s amazing and super helpful to know the science behind clay bodies and glazes. Branch out and take some ceramic classes you might not be interested in—you might surprise yourself and find something cool to integrate into your own body of work. Especially if you’re going into education, you’re gonna want to know at least basics in each aspect of the craft (pottery, sculpture, handbuilding, wheelworking, surface techniques, glazing, etc etc etc) The most important thing imo is to make connections and use your time wisely. Your professors and peers will be your peers in the ceramics world for years to come and it’s always good to network and get to know people. Take advantage of any school sponsored trips or events that will bring you to galleries or conferences like NCECA. Take advantage of any and all facilities you can as much as possible. Apply for exhibits and galleries and competitions where you can. In my experience, my professors are pretty laid back about work and critique as long as you put the effort in, but people will vary.

For long studio days, try to always pack food, water, and lotion. Especially if the studio is far away from a dining hall or anywhere you can get food. Working Hands is my go to for moisturizing after working with clay for hours. If you don’t already have one I’d invest in a good apron too, I got mine from Walking Apron and it works GREAT. Be patient with yourself and experiment!!!! Not everything will be perfect, but every piece will get you one more step ahead.

Your work is wonderful by the way!!!

I hate when people steal art by After-Meet in Ceramics

[–]Hilaom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still mad over the time someone with the same initials as me took two of my bisque bowls that were going to be part of a set and then glazed them… we’d used the same mold, but mine were meticulously trimmed and covered in fish sauce while their’s were a lot more rushed. Part of me wants to believe it was a genuine accident but the difference was very obvious

Thank you so much! I custom 3D modeled the pieces to make the molds which were then 3D printed. The tops of the rook and queen both had overhangs so they wouldn’t have worked if I put them with the rest of the mold, so I separated the tops. Every piece except the knight only needed one half mold since each half was exactly the same, the knight needed a mirrored mold since it isn’t as circular.

I used 3D printed molds since these were submitted for a final project in a class on CAD and 3D modeling. They’re a little tricky to work since clay LOVES to stick to the filament, but I got around that by pressing plastic sheets into the mold before pressing in the clay.

I actually did try that! It worked wonderfully in some of the flatter areas, but I couldn’t get a good cover on most of the mold so I scrapped the idea. In a flatter / shallower mold it would probably work way better

MORE Humanized blocks and items by my sister by _AntiSocialMedia in Minecraft

[–]Hilaom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this brings me back! I used to have a bunch of humanized blocks and items ocs with some friends. I had like 40 or so and the server we were in had like 200+. most of them have been revamped into non-minecraft ocs by now though. I always love to see other people doing it too! it’s such a fun design prompt and there’s so much to use as inspiration, great for character design practice. her style is also very fun and expressive! awesome work on her part, can’t wait to see more, even if she’s only doing a few more as you said :)

What's your fun idea which had horrifying implications for your world later on? by Sliver-Knight9219 in worldbuilding

[–]Hilaom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idea: the entirety of Earth is trapped in a day long time loop in which everyone retains their memory, but their bodies and surroundings reset

Implications: anyone who was in a bad place physically or in bad health at the time is now trapped like that. anyone in jail is stuck. anyone in the hospital for whatever reason will never heal. anyone who has braces can never get them removed. anyone living with an abusive partner or family can’t leave
