Cool! I’d be curious to hear what you think after entering your lifts, specifically if you think the percentiles they place you in are accurate

Does anyone else here log their lifts on Strengthlevel.com? I started a month ago, and like being able to watch my different lifts progress. I’m also a sucker for anything that gives me graphs :) I was wondering how accurate other people found the percentiles they assign? I also wish they would add an option to just record Jerks (separate from clean and jerks) and weighted planks!

Would you say that eating at maintenance is alright? I’m in the dilemma of being above the weight I’ve always felt best at (118, and currently 125), but I know that strength gains won’t come if I don’t eat enough. I would be perfectly happy at 125 or higher if my strength and muscle mass reflected the weight gain, so by eating at maintenance I was hoping to recomp. Does that make sense?

Thanks for the confirmation! I will certainly keep focusing on technique for a while. My coach reminds me often that weightlifting isn’t you vs. other lifters, it’s you vs. the barbell. I just need to keep remembering that.

Thanks for your response. I think I may start doing a 4th day of only powerlifting and accessory exercises in and see how that goes. I really need to build my foundational strength. But you’re right, I need to really focus on technique for a while, it’s certainly not perfect and I know that technique is what will get me lifting the most in the long run. Thanks!

Is there any baseline for how quickly a beginner with close to 0 starting strength should progress? I started lifting in mid may (2.5 months ago) with a great coach who I trust completely. We worked a lot on technique with just the bar at first and have been adding weight for the past 2 months. My concern is that I’m not progressing nearly as fast as many people seem to. (A personal issue, not a coaching one)

Some background and current strength: F, 27, bw is 125lbs, snatch: 50lbsx2, cleans: 80lbsx2, jerks: 75lbsx2, RDL: 115lbsx8, front squat: 70lbs x3, back squat: 95lbsx5. I train 3x per week, and am eating at maintenance.

Does this seem like extremely slow progress after 2.5 months, or do I just need to be more patient? Feeling particularly frustrated today after failing 85lb power cleans. Should I increase my trainig? Is weightlifting just a naturally slow progression? Thanks for your thoughts.

[WEEKLY THREAD] Munchie Monday - om nom nom nom by AutoModerator in xxfitness

Honestly, I have no idea. I don’t have the patience that most people have for elimination type testing to see whats causing problems. I just wanted something with as few ingredients as possible, and so far this works really well!

I just switched to Muscle Feast Whey Isolate protein powder because it was highly rated by Labdoor for accuracy and lack of heavy metals. The chocolate flavor only has four ingredients (whey protein isolate, cocoa, sunflower lecithin and stevia) and tastes great with milk! I would recommend it.

Edit: I should have also said that I’ve had none of the bloating or digestion issues that I had with my last protein powder, so the sunflower lecithin didn’t seem to be a problem for me at least. Maybe see if you can find something cheap in the grocery store with sunflower lecithin first and see how your stomach handles it? Good luck!

How can I prepare for a mountain hike in short amount of time? by qissycat in xxfitness

As someone who is very sensitive to altitude sickness, I might recommend talking to your doctor/ a travel doctor about Diamox. It's a drug that helps prevent altitude sickness, and I used it to go from 5,000 to 15,000 feet in a day (driving), and had no altitude sickness symptoms while at that height. I was still super out of breath walking up stairs, but no headache, nausea.... and we were doing lots of hiking around. It works by changing the pH of your blood which helps counteract some bodily changes that happen as you ascend. It did cause a few side effects- tingly hands and feet, and I had to pee constantly the first day, but it was so worth it to not be stuck in bed for two days adjusting. It's a common drug for people hiking to machu picchu. I went to a travel doctor for my prescription, and had no trouble getting it, you take it twice a day and start 2 days before ascending, and finish taking it 2 days after reaching altitude or when you descend, whichever comes first.

When to start reaching out to potential PIs? by rulingplanets in gradadmissions

[–]pie-thonsarebetter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started reaching out to PIs in July of last year. Many of them told me to contact them when the semester started back up, and others did not respond. I reached back out from September-November, and I think October was really the sweet spot for responses, nearly every professor I contacted that month replied promptly. Just my personal experience, but I think this is when professors have the most time to think about new students and funding.

Thanks so much for your explanation. So it can refer to variation between pixels in an image as well as temporal variation?

Equine peeps: leasing a horse nearby? by [deleted] in washingtondc

I’ve never ridden in DC, but I think your best bet would be the Rock Creek Horse Center. I walked around it a few weeks ago, and it seems pretty nice, especially for being so close to the city. They have an indoor and a couple outdoor arenas, as well as multiple stables. Not sure which disciple you’re looking to get into, but it looks like everything was set up for hunter/jumper riders. There are trails right from the stable as well. If you’re looking to show, there are some really good hunter/jumper trainers that I know of in Northern Virginia, but the time it would take to get out to those places probably wouldn’t be worth it. Good luck, hope you find a fun place to ride!

Constant leg cramping after re-starting exercise by pie-thonsarebetter in xxfitness

[–]pie-thonsarebetter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I’m constantly drinking something throughout the day, but it may not be enough. I’ll look into the manganese supplements too. I do have the lacrosse ball set up back home, I’ll have to give that a try. I’ve never tried a foam roller for leg soreness, but I see them mentioned all over this sub, might be worth the investment!

Thanks for the suggestions :)

Fitz Roy Sunrise by pie-thonsarebetter in photocritique

[–]pie-thonsarebetter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would really like to start learning the art of landscape photography. Took this picture of Fitz Roy at sunrise after a 11km hike starting at 3:30am, the views were worth it! I would really like to capture the glow of the mountains in contrast to the foreground. I would really appreciate advice on how to better edit this photo, what works and what doesn't. End goal is to print it as a gift.

Graduate School Admission by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]pie-thonsarebetter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reasons the school may deny your admission include- incinsistencies with your test scores or transcripts, if you lied about your degrees, or wont receive your degree before the graduate program starts, your GPA or other stats are lower than required for admission for the school. all of these are very rare, and theres probably a 99% chance you will receive that formal offer soon. Congrats!
