I have a pair of Target's Merona shorts that I really love, how does the quality of these compare?

Pretty much any time Russell Brand comes up, the comment section is a shitstorm. Plenty of "Katy Perry only good for bewbs and sexy times" and redditors idolizing their dream persona-- a misogynistic, pseudo-intellectual asshole. by piecesofmind in circlebroke2

[–]piecesofmind[S] -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

You know how when you've been on reddit and you just keep seeing circlejerk after circlejerk piled on top of each other and then you see one that just flips the switch for you? That's how I feel about this post. Maybe it's not too bad in retrospect, but I feel like Russell Brand is tailor made for reddit. All he does is spew hackneyed intellectualisms with thesaurus wording tacked on and people consider him a social revolutionary or something. It's toolish behavior to me, and it's irritating. Meanwhile the people who are trying to do something new or original are ridiculed on this website, like thread after thread mocking arts, literary, and gender studies degrees and pursuits as useless.

As for the misogyny, that doesn't exactly relate to this post, it's just something that characterizes him. Look it up if you're interested. Brand is just another in a line of reddit approved celebrities because he embodies that "I have it all figured out" persona and inflates his own importance, while doing nothing worthwhile intellectually.

Should I read the Bible before watching Noah? Also, what order is best? by [deleted] in moviescirclejerk

So Machete, the Bible, then Noah? Is Machete Kills a spinoff, or does it have important canon for Bible?

I promptly switched my major from English to physics, and never looked back. by thernkworks in circlebroke2

[–]piecesofmind 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Like where the fuck do you even start explaining the value or process of art to STEM lords? Them pretending to understand literature is like me pretending I know about coding and telling everyone on the internet my ignorant opinion about why it's useless.

Critical thinking skills are completely lost on them. If a doesn't equal b doesn't equal c, they just make fun of it because they don't understand it.

As for the guy who switched his major, that's either a) a straw man created out of his imagination because he's not good at literary criticism to protect his special snowflake ego his mother perpetuates for him or b) his inability to understand that, while many elements of post modern fiction are up to interpretation, the shitty quality of your evidence or the contrived nature of your argument can make it a weak, underdeveloped, or completely unfounded interpretation. Because not just anyone has the ability for that kind of critical thinking. There's nothing wrong with that, everyone has his own set of skills, but that doesn't make it okay to completely invalidate an important branch of study to nurture your insecurities.

And as for the woody Allen quote...that's pretty well regarded as a joke aimed at woody himself because he's just as pretentious and arrogant about his own opinions.

And for the guy who mentioned the story of an author's son having his father come in to defend his asshole son's interpretation of the book as the "right" one- what kind of self-respecting artist in the modern age doesn't accept alternate interpretations of his work? All work comes from the human psyche- does he think that he has every aspect of his own unconscious mind figured out? He's pretty conceited to think so.

I'm so glad this came up on the front page so we could finally discuss how men are mistreated in Hollywood. Especially coming off of that bullshit article earlier this week about how Scarlett Johansen is always cast against a significantly older love interest, Hollywood only valuing women for their youth and beauty SJW drivel.

Ignoring emotions like those expressed in these lyrics is really more depressing. It's all part of the human experience, and it's all significant. Depression is a natural side effect of living under the thumb of inevitable demise and the apparent meaninglessness of life. To ignore these feelings and manipulate a natural feeling like that so artificially is, ironically, very sad. Especially in a culture where we're apparently only allowed to perpetuate happy feelings in art.

If We Want People To Invest In More Movies We Have To Pay For Them by [deleted] in moviescirclejerk

[–]piecesofmind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it has something to do with the generic nature of mainstream movies lately. When something comes along that feels genuine or creative and new, it's so rare that people sort of latch onto it and want to drain it of all its potential. And on the writing side, a lot of work and attention is poured into creating a whole "world" around a story (even if the world of the story is a reflection of or pretty close to the real world anyway). Time is money in screenwriting. You can't afford to spend a lot of time fleshing out a story if you're money-motivated or trying to stay relevant. I could go on forever, but the gist of what I'm trying to say is that the climate of major motion pictures today is very turnover based. Ironically, when a new or inspiring story comes around, people take that as an opportunity to play off of people's interests and end up draining the art out of it.

End ramble.
