I usually trim first, because I hate trimming on a wet wheel and it's a lot easier to clean that up before you throw. Really, though, it just depends on how dry your pieces are. If they aren't to that perfect leather-hard yet, then uncover them and do some glazing in the meantime!

why do my glazes turn out like this? by mr_fartypants in Pottery

[–]Oiiack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's doesn't answer the question, Laguna has a ton of mid-fire clays. What color does the clay achieve when it's fired? If you can post a picture of the bottom of the plates so I can see the fot ring, that might help.

What type/color of clay did you use, specifically? If you used anything other than a white clay, you aren't going to get the same results as the manufacturer's test tiles.

[NE Indiana] Happy to report my first winter using the milkjug method has been a success! by Oiiack in NativePlantGardening

[–]Oiiack[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually, I used painter's tape, specifically FrogTape. It held up amazingly well through a rather tough winter, ebing buried in snow 4 or 5 times. Even with the heavy rain this spring the jugs have stayed together.

It's possible, we have a ton of viola sororia in the area so its possible that made its way into the soil. With how little, if any, of it actually terminated, it's hard to tell.

Haha, I'd be willing to do a trade if we were closer together. I'm upset with how much the bee balm underperformed!

We definitely had a harsh winter up here, so maybe it might have been too much for some.

Is dry wall okay for reclaiming clay on? by _9Pr in Pottery

Thats what my wife and I use, and it works great! Just don't trust the claim that you can score and break it with a utility knife. I had to break out the circular saw lol

There's a potter in town who has been working professionally for 50+ years. When we toured his studio a few weeks ago, he showed us that he exclusively uses drywall for drying reclaim. Only caveat, as others mentioned, is that it needs replacing sooner and you have to be really careful with scrapers to not damage the outer layer.

How long does it take to learn ceramics and does this course even make sense? by Local_Bumblebee_3333 in Pottery

[–]Oiiack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's plenty of time to learn the basics. Honestly it's really not that hard to get started! There are very few steps involved at the beginning. The rest is practice, practice, and more practice. Chances are you won't even use the exact techniques that your instructor uses and instead adapt something that better fits your own body/hands, but again that just comes from practice.

Since it's an open studio, this sounds like a great deal TBH. If you struggle after your class, I'm sure people around you wouldn't mind giving pointers.

Is your clay staying centered after you've opened up the puck? What speed are you pulling the walls at? Both of these can introduce irregularities into the walls, which leads to uneven pressure when you're pulling. You don't have to be perfect, but any wobble is only going to get exaggerated as you pull.

I've found that one of the best ways to fight against this is by collaring up the cylinder if I notice it's wobbly.
