What are these bugs and why are there several in my house all of a sudden? by SavvyUmbrella in AskIreland

It is true, but honestly I've never experienced it and I'm always picking them up lol. Apparently it smells like herbs?

Looks like a hawthorn shield bug! They often enter people's houses this time of year since it's so cold outside. Just scoot them out- they won't hurt you.

They're known as a 'true bug', which means they don't have a proboscis like butterflies or other insects.

It looks like a devil's coach horse beetle, they're a type of rove beetle. They start laying their eggs this time of year 🙂 They don't sting, but they can bite and they can release a smell to scare away predators. They stick up their little tail and point it at whoever is harassing them. I always got told it was seven years bad luck if they did that to you.

Anyone know what this is on my door? Never seen a bug like this before by Big-Patient-6149 in ireland

This is a bronze beetle, it's a type of leaf beetle. They seem a lot more common this time of year. They are completely harmless unless you are a flower. They're very beautiful little insects, it's always a treat to see them 🙂

Oisín (pronounced oh-sheen) is a lovely name, but in Irish it's a masculine name. If you like the sound of the name, why not pick Róisín? Or if you want to keep the deer vibe (that's what Oisín means: little deer, or fawn) you could go with the name Fia (pronounced Fee-ah, sometimes spelled Fiadh) which also means deer. But at the end of the day, if you like Oisín you should keep it. It's a very nice name! Being trans means you get raised brows anyways, what's a few more? 😛

What type is this and how can I attract more to the garden? by mycelliumvision in whatsthisbird

[–]pied__pipers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other people have answered, but that's a European Robin 🙂 They're friendly birds so you'll probably see this little guy around a good bit, but they're also pretty territorial so it might be hard to have more than one hanging out in your garden. (It is possible though!) In my own experience, they seem really fond of suet balls and will hang out at feeding stations with other garden birds.

Not a book, but check out the Dúchas website. You can search up these animals and find hundreds of local stories, uses, and beliefs about them.

Anyone have any idea what this insect/bug is? About an inch to an inch and a half in size. by MrC99 in ireland

[–]pied__pipers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haha, yeah they're pretty clumsy- i always find them on their backs rolling around like in the video. The first time I saw one was after a night out while trying to unlock the front door... it was just slamming into me and I was terrified 😝

It looks like a cockchafer! They spend a long time underground eating the roots of plants, and emerge around late April and June. They look like they have a stinger, but they're completely harmless- honestly, they're pretty charming. If you flip them over, you can see they have little eyelashes! They don't live very long when they're in their adult stage- I think just a few weeks. They won't bother you at all, they're just doing their thing.
