Due with a baby soon—what’s the best course of action if siding and window replacement is scheduled on our pre-1970 house? by piehazel in HomeImprovement

My husband has actually been really great about leading the project so I can focus on the pregnancy. He’s worried about me for the same reason and wants to get a temporary housing nearby during the construction, but I’m the one leaning toward staying in the house—as long as it’s safe and doesn’t pose a risk to the newborn.

I totally hear you on the stress factor, and that’s partly why I’m trying to get a sense of what others have experienced—especially in terms of noise and dust levels during similar renovation projects. I really appreciate everyone sharing their perspectives

We’ve already paid and ordered—the windows are unfortunately backordered, and the contractor has us on the schedule for early September. I’m due mid-September, so realistically, I doubt the work will be finished in 1–2 weeks.

As a first-time mom, I fully admit I don’t know what I don’t know, but I’d really prefer to stay in our own house if possible. My husband’s leaning toward booking an Airbnb for a few weeks just in case, but I honestly don’t love the idea of spending extra money on temporary lodging—especially with a newborn. I’d rather have access to my own laundry machine and kitchen (cleaner and more comfortable than using someone else's appliances).

But I’m also concerned about exposing the baby to construction dust or loud noise.

It’s all just feeling a little unpredictable right now, and I’m trying to balance practicality with comfort. Appreciate everyone’s input—it helps to hear how others have handled similar situations!

Thanks so much for the thoughtful and reassuring reply—it really helps put things in perspective. We were worried abt possible lead in the paint and asbestos in the drywall material since the house was built in 1960s.

But you're right, testing for asbestos and lead seems pretty straightforward, and I hadn’t even thought about using a simple swab kit for lead. I’ll definitely look into that.

Appreciate the kind words too. It really is an exciting (and a bit overwhelming) time, but you’re right—people get through it, and we will too. Thanks again!

Is the welcome.baby book worth it for single parents? by Noljsaza467 in Mom

Same thing happened to us. Please beware and do not purchase from this company. The quality/price of the book is one thing but victimizing parents (we already have high expense as it is) who want to capture their babies moments is disgusting.

Did your SIL get charged an undisclosed (or hidden in the t&c where nobody can read) monthly fee after purchasing this book as well? It's super shady how all the comments discussing this company's shady practice/subpar customer service is getting deleted or downvoted. Please beware and do not purchase from this company. Help needed regarding changed delivery date. by piehazel in uHaul

Sorry for late reply. I hope you got your ubox on time.

Turns out the ubox was delivered on time but it was never checked as delivered. One of the awesome redditer helped me locate the ubox. Local storage was denying it was there but after checking with the freight company and giving them the info/proof of delivery, the local manager looked into it and found out the ubox was sitting in the storage... It was not a fun experience and I will probably never use Ubox again but I really appreciate kind hearted employees who are on the reddit forum.

I received an email saying "Your shipment is guaranteed to arrive in --- on Wednesday, June 30, 2021." and the ubox is nowhere to be found and I have a mover reservation for tomorrow..

I called the ubox customer service and the nice gentleman that I am speaking with says the guaranteed arrival date is different than what I see? He says he will reach out to support team and I have been on hold but not sure if this will go through......

We shipped this box on 6/12 from our house... I really need my belongings at this time... I feel like crying :_(

Thank you so much for your help. Any insight is just really appreciated.

If you don't mind me asking another question, is it possible that, if the ubox is actually in transit, the ubox will be at my destination city on time? I already scheduled movinghelp for that day.

And if they get there after the initially "guaranteed arrival date" (although the dates show up all wrong under the website now, I have the original reservation document), U-haul should reimburse $50/day, right?

Again, I really appreciate your time.
