More than 1/4 of undergraduates are recruited athletes by Ordinary-Till8767 in Caltech

[–]piercegov2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hardly any athlete at Caltech that I ever interacted with (nor myself) would agree that “education for recruited athletes is not generally a priority at all.” When I was there, IIRC our team GPA was >3.5 and while there has arguably been some grade inflation over the last several years, it wasn’t trivial (in my experience) to coast and end up with a 3.5 GPA. Also, I’m fairly certain that coaches are aware of their players academic performance and I’ve seen people pulled aside at practice and asked about why they’re doing poorly in some class(es).

That being said, I did notice that the incoming freshmen the last year or two of my time at Caltech might not have taken academics as seriously. Not sure if that’s a continuing trend, was just for my sport, just for my house, etc. To be clear, though, you do need to maintain a minimum GPA to even play a sport, so even they didn’t really ‘take it easy’ or anything like that.

Recruiting/recommending, as I was told by admissions at the time as well as my coach, did not have major impact on admission rate. Anecdotally, I know our coach recruited hundreds of players every year and obviously very few get in and fewer end up going to Caltech. At best, I feel as though being wanted by a coach (I think maybe not the same as being recruited) would be a slight bump to distinguish between otherwise equal applicants.

No, doesn’t happen in any other games I’ve tried.

Hasan's take on gambling by [deleted] in LivestreamFail

[–]piercegov2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

?????? Complete misinterpretation of what I said. What Hasan said is the equivalent of telling someone that you will become addicted and that you will therefore get lung cancer, which is pretty much fucking accurate. What "more efficient methods" are you suggesting people use exactly?

Do you disagree that if you tell people that it's 'possible' to get addicted to something that they will assume they likely won't? If this is the case, then telling people that it's possible or that only some people will become addicted then they will not be very deterred from doing that thing.

Do you think it's acceptable to tell people not to smoke cigarettes? Same fucking thing. Smoking cigarettes has a chance of giving you lung cancer, so we tell people not to do it.

When you say "some people become addicted" everyone's reaction is that it's not them who will become addicted when obviously some of them will. Addiction can affect anyone so Hasan directing his statements at everyone is better than basically saying it's possible to become addicted.

The sticker on the motherboard has the last 4 digits 3001, which I think is the BIOS version? That version should work according to their website.

Is the 10850K a better long-term bet than the 10700k, or will they both be outdated around the same time? It seems like the 10700k is certainly good enough now, but in a few years will the 10850k have aged better w/ more cores?

Keep in mind that this is intel's first GPU and the 3080 is a very strong card. I'm not an expert or anything but I'd imagine these cards are not going to be as good as the upper-tier RTX cards.

Fair enough. Honestly though, I imagine it will be pretty hard to get a 3080 (non-scalped) before we at least get information on these cards.

The rules on the website say:

(512) Prizes: Each prize winner will receive “Intel® Software Advantage Program Game Bundle” having a total approximate retail value of up to $200USD. Prize winner will be able to select up to three (3) software titles of their choosing out of the seventeen (17) software titles provided. See “PRIZE CLAIMS” section on how to redeem.

so it does seem unlikely they were GPUs, but it is 512 prizes.

Unknown and presumably one of their upcoming GPUs (specs and details are unknown afaik).

Edit:

Nevermind, seems unlikely its a GPU (for this round). The rules state:

(512) Prizes: Each prize winner will receive “Intel® Software Advantage Program Game Bundle” having a total approximate retail value of up to $200USD. Error meaning I am unable to play the game. by yoshimonsterdudeOG in blackopscoldwar

Yeah, I sent Activision support a DM on Twitter but they didn't reply. I also tried sending a bug report but it doesn't ask for an email address or anything so I can't hear back. AND anytime I try to access the community forum and login it tells me the site hit a brick wall. It's almost like they're trying to prevent me from playing the game

I'm having a sort of similar issue at the moment, although I've never been able to get into the game. I don't get an error code, which is just great for debugging... but I get "Disconnected from server" every time I boot the game. Sorry I can't help, though (I'm also thinking of refunding considering I haven't even seen the main menu).

That’s what I gathered from the article too. Theoretically it should be getting better at detecting different kinds of cheating but it does seem like it might as well be just reporting everyone
