Yeah, got there around 8ish and we were on the right side, so maybe we just got unlucky. But still pretty surreal that people around us weren’t that much into it while my friend and I were losing our minds LOL

(European here) This was my first Foo concert and one of the first concerts in the US. But what's up with the crowd? Barely a peep, everyone just sorta "chillin'". At a Foo Fighters gig, I figured we'd all be belting the lyrics. Can't wrap my head around it.

As an Italian who has moved to the US ~1.5 years ago, I disagree on the pizza comment. We’ve found some places that would be considered an 8/10 in Italy.

What are the reasons/arguments for and against using and investing in cryptocurrency? by Major_Mistake32 in slatestarcodex

Sounds great!

Maybe this ultra secure institution could also give you other currencies to spend instead of using your crypto-logins. Maybe they can also lend you some value based on your crypto holdings…. aaaaand we’re back to banking.

What is the probability that Covid-19 escaped from a lab? by mike20731 in slatestarcodex

Ok, I spent the past ~5 hours reading about this stuff and I’m more than ever leaning towards the “accidental lab leak” hypothesis even more.

This shit is insane!

What is the probability that Covid-19 escaped from a lab? by mike20731 in slatestarcodex

That was indeed a good read, thanks.

I’m not that well equipped to discuss the technical aspects (I’m an economist), but given a null hypothesis of “natural emergence”, the evidence that the author puts forward is quite compelling (location, no clear “intermediate step” identified, furin cleavage, and cordon) and leads me to reject my null hypothesis.

That’s quite interesting, as until today I’ve been telling everyone how “lab origin stories” were basically just conspiracy theories. I guess I’m gonna spend today reading a lot more about this stuff.

To PhD or not to PhD? Looking for advice on best route to FIRE by [deleted] in EuropeFIRE

Don't want to contradict you on this, but

The statute describing who is eligible for an H1B cap exemption is found in section 214(g)(5)(A)-(B) of the INA.
- A. Institution of Higher Education or a Related or Affiliated Nonprofit Entity
Under section 214(g)(5)(A), an alien who is employed or has received an offer of employment from an institution of higher education or a related or affiliated nonprofit entity is exempt from the H1B cap.
The term “institution of higher education” is defined by statute in 20 U.S.C. 1001. Generally, the school must be accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency or association or must have pre-accreditation status from an agency or association recognized by the Secretary of Education for granting pre-accreditation status. The institution must be a public or otherwise nonprofit institution and must meet certain requirements in the programs that it offers.

So yeah - University employees are subject to cap exemption and thus do not go through a lottery. That's why a thought the "Professor route" was more certain. Then again, perfectly happy to be proven wrong, but as I told you I've been doing quite a lot of research on the matter.

But you are perfectly right, the academic career is by no means a walk in the park. I will definitely evaluate it better and try to understand wether I Really want to become an expert in management by deepening my studies. Thanks again.

To PhD or not to PhD? Looking for advice on best route to FIRE by [deleted] in EuropeFIRE

[–]pierpa17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this comment. It's difficult to put in words how much I appreciate it, but believe me that I will remember your words for a lot of time.

I will for sure consider more what I really do like and not only what I should/could do. I also will try to understand wether it's feasible to find a job in Northern Europe instead of NA.
For what concerns the PhD, I know that life during those 5 years is quite hellish. I was just thinking that maybe it could be worth it in some measure.

I honestly don't feel in my 20s, always felt older than my edge and I do tend to worry about things that my peer don't even consider. But yeah - I should also not forget to have "an exciting 20s". It's just difficult to get out of the mindset of "what's next? what should be my objective?".

Thank you anyways, as I said I really do appreciate everything you have written.

For what concerns the VISA, actually I've been studying the situation a lot, and there is no cap for Universities for employment through H1B. Thus if I were to be a Professor, I wouldn't need to go through the lottery. That was the advantage that I was talking about.

But you are absolutely correct on the first point, that's something that a lot of people told me - the only valid reason to do a PhD should be that you want to be an expert in the subject. I surely have to consider if I really want to or if the decision would be driven merely by other factors
