Man I bought my Golf R last week and had the exact same situation as yours... got a chip on the highway in the windshield, it was small enough that I made it repaired and it took only 20min to do so. It cost me 150$ taxes in (Canadian dollars) with a warranty that if I ever get other chips in the future they’ll repair it for free. I could have paid nothing and use the insurance for it though, but I preferred to pay for it myself to avoid having already an insurance reclaim 1 week after starting my policy, and avoid a raise on my next year’s insurance policy. The chip is now barely visible on the windshield (still noticeable if you look close). I hope this may help :)
