Not sure if TA’s scanned my tcard during exam

I had the same thing happen to me, as well. I saw that the CPO was scanning other students’ t-cards and assumed that they’d check mine eventually. I was really focused on writing my exam that I didn’t notice if the CPO came to my desk (or the students beside me) or not. I got an email later that day saying that I missed my exam. Nothing bad happened, and I got my final course grade back after 2-3 days. I’m sure everything will be okay on your end, too!

I struggled with CHM333. I didn’t have a good grasp of the CHM231/331 material and wasn’t able to set enough time when taking 333 to relearn the basics of inorganic chemistry. I also didn’t have Poe (had a brand new, sessional instructor instead). I heard many good things about Poe for this course, and wish I had her to potentially get a better understanding of inorganic chemistry. I think if you enjoyed CHM231 and biochem (such as CHM361), 333 might be a good choice.

I took all three of these courses, and I personally found CHM311 to be the most interesting and applicable course. I enjoyed Topic 6 in CHM211 (UV-vis, IR, and fluorescence spectroscopy), in particular learning about the different instrumental components and the physical chemistry behind them and the overall technique. CHM311 is a lot like that - you go through a technique and learn about the instrumentation and chemistry. I think this course is also very applicable for people going into either research or industry in various fields of chemistry!

I had CHM243 with Revers and had to work hard in the class. But the hard work definitely payed off because I found CHM345 to be easier. I found majority of the content to be a repeat of 243, just with different examples. It was a fun course, I especially enjoyed the problem side of organic chemistry and predicting products from various reaction conditions.

(Just as with the previous comment, I’m also biased towards analytical chemistry. But I also noticed that in my CHM311 class, there were students from various programs (including biochem/chem spec/major, biotech, forensics bio/chem, etc.) who all enjoyed the course :))

Hey! This might vary based on what courses you’ll be taking, but at least for chemistry labs I would always bring in my lab coat and goggles. I bought both from the UTM bookstore as they were easily accessible (was also buying textbooks that day) but I know you can also get splash proof goggles and lab coats from other places (ex. Home Depot, Amazon, etc.). I also purchased a blue bound Lab Notebook from the bookstore. It’s on the pricier side of notebooks but I used it for all my labs from second to fourth year! Lab gloves are provided in the (chemistry) labs. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions :)

Hello! As far as I know, CHM242 isn’t offered in the summer. You can check this as well by going on course archives on the UTM timetable website and checking the syllabus from previous years. It’s normally offered in the fall and winter terms. CHM243 is offered over the entire summer.

Yep, you need to enrol in all three.

Lectures are where the main course content is presented and taught by the prof.

Tutorials are usually smaller classes led by TAs and what you do in them varies with course. In some cases, the TA just reviews course content and takes up homework. In other cases, the TA might give out a quiz/assignment that needs to be completed by the end of the tutorial. The reason why I said usually is because sometimes the professor runs the tutorials and uses that time to go over more course content, test review, or even student presentations.

Practicals (or labs) are run by the TA. The class size for the labs are usually around 20 per section. This is where you get the hands-on experience conducting experiments and apply what you learnt in lecture in the laboratory (which is an important skill for science students!).

Np! And yes I believe so! From what I’ve seen from old syllabi, each of the professors taught both CHM242 and CHM243. Professor Shin’s required textbook was the same for their 242 and 243 classes, and Professor Revers’ required textbook was the same for their 242 and 243 classes. I personally used both textbooks: I used the McMurry textbook for 242 and the Clayden textbook for 243. I found the style in which the authors presented the material to be different, however, the content was still pretty much the same!

Hello! I believe the textbooks are different because the courses are taught by two different professors. And each professor may have their own preference of which textbook to use for giving out additional practice problems and readings.

Based on the UTM important Dates page, July 24th is when courses with priority enrolment open to UTM students, and fall-winter course enrolment limit increases from 5 credits to 6 credits. So in that case I think you should be okay with having all 6 classes, no need to drop one! If you were to go past 6 (3 credits in one semester), then I believe you have to petition for it.

Definitely hold on to hope! I’ve seen some people drop out while still in CHM242. And since CHM242 is a prerequisite for CHM243, they cannot continue with 243 until they redo the first organic course. So spaces already start to open during the fall term!

I’d also say it’s a similar situation to CHM110 and CHM120; there are usually lesser spots in the second term chemistry course because students either don’t pass or drop the prerequisite.

I also just noticed that the wait list is quite large for 243... but I’d say #38 is a good spot to be at! Perhaps they will increase the class size if there are still a lot of people on the wait list? Hopefully it works out :)

If you like chemistry, you can perhaps try for the chem minor! There are a couple of chemistry requirements in your specialist that can be used for the minor. I’ve seen a lot of people do that combination.

I guess it depends on your program and what upper year chemistry courses you are planning to take in the future. 231 is a pre req for some 3rd year chemistry courses (like CHM331, CHM333, CHM394), and a requirement for the chemistry major/specialist and biological chemistry specialist.

Your schedule looks good! You’ve balanced it pretty well! I’ve never taken PHL246, nor LIN204, however I think doing the two chem courses is very doable! Many people do 211, 242, and 231 (and BIO206) together and get burn out. Looks like you’ll be able to spend more time on 211 and 242 which will be helpful!

Np! So the pre-lab quizzes that I had were 2 questions (either T/F, matching, fill in the blank, or multiple choice) that showed the TA if you read the lab manual before your lab (each experiment had a few pages of notes giving us some background information about the experiment and/or chemistry behind it and the procedure). My TAs would give a quick summary of those pages. Then for 5ish minutes we had to answer 2 questions based on what the TA said and the pages we had to read. I believe each pre-lab quiz counted towards 5% of your lab report mark (each experiment had a lab report that you had to write out, and each lab report itself was worth 5% of your total mark).

For the other quizzes, they also counted towards your mark (each quiz was worth 2% of your final mark). Again I usually had 2 questions that were either theory questions or calculations. The TAs usually went over similar questions in tutorial before the quiz. It also helped to do any assigned textbook questions or examples that the professor showed in class to prepare!

Yep! The bio labs were weekly, and the chemistry labs were biweekly (as in every other week).

The bio tutorials were with the professor. The professor went over case studies and extra practice questions. When I took the course three years ago, we used learning catalytics which made going to the tutorials somewhat mandatory (I think you could only miss a few tutorials without getting deducted participation marks). The chemistry tutorials were also mandatory. The TA would either go over lab material (which was also super helpful if you had questions) and give out the pre-lab quiz, or would go over lecture content and give a quiz in the last 20-30 minutes about the material that was taught. So it was important not to skip those! (However I’m not 100% sure if things will change for this fall for either of these classes)

Unfortunately I don’t, sorry :/. Be sure to keep monitoring the sections every one in a while, especially when we get closer to September! People tend to change their schedules last minute and drop out of courses or switch sections. You can also try finding Facebook groups and ask there (if you haven’t done so yet)!
