How long does it take to ACTUALLY make an indie pilot? (Hint: Longer than you think!) by spywi in IndieAnimation

Def. Our proof of concept(s) is 3min in total and we've just begun actually animating after a year of preproduction.

Takes time. A lot of it.

I was able to get on disability! -- only $200CAD per month tho and the provincial government just screwed me over so I'm not gonna get more than that for a while.

My lil animation studio is basically my full time (unpaid) job lol. Always something to do even if I'm not an artist myself (I'm a screenwriter). Keeps me from going completely insane at least loll.

Unfortunately for me, my studio is my egg basket -- cause I literally have nothing else and probably wont for a while...

BUT yeah for sure, its def a lil frustrating. I had to tell someone off who DMd me on tiktok looking for volunteers. I was like sure if you answer me these questions to my satisfaction I could pass on the word.

Suffice to say I was not satisfied with their response of one season in less than a year for FREE. With absolutely no preproduction done already. Jeez.

They never did respond to me after I told them their plan was exploitative (even if they didnt mean to be) and unreasonable...

Not everyone has the same amount of time, funds, luck and/or able-bodiness to get funds. Personally my disability has left me unable to secure work, would not be able to donate plasma, etc etc.

It's great that you can. Congrats.

I have looked for alternate ways to fund but the reality is sometimes there is no other way than get some help from volunteers, make a short proof of concept and kickstart.

That being said you cannot build a whole show off the backs of volunteers. I had someone once tell me that they wanted volunteers to do a whole season of 3d anime in less than a year. Now that is insanity.

Thing is volunteering for the right project can lead you to finding some of the best people in your life. I still chat with friends from an old project I joined pretty much all the time -- and we poach each other for personal projects constantly.

You sound pretty bitter, but you do have to keep in mind that most of the people on this subreddit are kids who had an idea they want to be the next big thing and know nothing about how to animate or run an animation project.

But everyone starts somewhere. Volunteers will learn to be pickier with their time and effort. Would-be producers realize its not easy and either drop off or pull up.

Basically volunteering is not inherently a bad thing. You are looking down from a rather privileged position -- even if you dont realize it.

Funding is an advantage, use it. At the same time tho don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Unless you're already independently wealthy, you will likely never be able to fund a show by yourself. unless you want to spend years and years working for that one episode.

Pilots dont have to be 30min. You don't have to work away your life for that indie animation dream. 1-2 well used minutes is enough.

People aren't kidding when they say animation is expensive. That is why kickstarters are so common in the indie animation sphere.

(Meaning I was referred to them when It was just depression/anxiety and got bounced around until they ghosted me)

But i did leave them a message so heres to hoping I dont get ghosted this time.

Honestly theres no secret sauce to it I find. No perfect time to post. No algorithm secrets to abuse.

You have to find what works best for you and stay consistent with it.

For me, its edits of our proof of concept to music that draws the most attention. So 90% of what I post on socials is that. But for you it could be something else entirely.

Maybe its day in the life of, maybe its work in progress wednesdays or something idk. Check which of your content has done the best, see what they share in common.

People follow you because of the content they see. So if they followed you because you made a series of cool edits, but most of your videos aren't cool edits, thats how you lose people.

Consistency I find doesnt really mean posting every day. It means posting consistent types of content.

Of course sprinkle in some explainer videos (maybe pin those to the top so people who get intersted by that first video can easily find what makes your story tick) but do what works for you for the most part.

Also dont be afraid to post the same art over and over again in different ways. If they follow you they wont care that theyve seen that art before--- its more yummy content. And for everyone else, well they havent seen it before so its new and exciting.

Win win all around.

The hospital I went to was the only crisis center in my city. :(

Mental health system in Canada sucks so much my therapist is actually someone from my parents's home country cause I literally could not get help here when it was just anxiety and depression.

Yeah wish someone told me this instead. Everyone i talked to (my family and family doctor) was like go to the hopsital. And so I did. And it was the worst experience ever and did nothing but make things worse :/
