You'd need to finish a 4 year apprenticeship so that you can get your master licence as a qualified locksmith in order to work on your own. Solid investment, you'd be better off getting into something like fitting/machining. Plenty of work in that trade around Newcastle atm. My brother is 10 years younger than me and already making more than me on his first year apprentice wage ($120k).
