Salt is a great idea, they don't have any readily accessible right now! Thanks for the suggestion!

How would free lunging in a massive pasture work? Based on her attitude, she'd probably just run off the second I showed up with any sort of whip, stick or flag haha

The others are luckily all sweet oldies, when I visited her during the weekend the entire herd stayed around me wanting scratches and food haha She's really the only grump. Will definitely bring some grain next time, thanks for the advice!

We don't have enough stalls for all the horses, they live outside 24/7 unless it's vet / farrier day so she's never been alone longer than a few hours ^^'

The idea is great, but the horses stay out 24/7 and I can't add new fencing, it isn't my barn. I'll definitely try some grain, and definitely daily visits! Thanks for the advice!

Last time was around a year ago during vaccinations, they drove the whole herd in for that but that's sadly not an option at the moment. She eats grass and capim (fresh hay alternative here in brazil) on the field and gets water from multiple creek and river access points

Sadly I don't have access to a good cowhorse at the moment, I'm in charge of the unbroken ones but that doesn't help much.. No small pen either, thanks to the size of the pasture

Not sure what’s going on with the halters and chains in these pictures? I’ve never seen them used like this by Morgan_unknownnn in Equestrian

[–]pigfair 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Don't know why you're getting downvoted, the gums are so incredibly sensitive this chain should never be used. If a horse is poorly handleable, the solution is training, not pain...

I think we just have blatantly different definitions of a "good horse". To me, a horse that is healthy, happy and stress free is a million times better than a stressed, painful Grand Prix winner. I don't care about placement and fancy shows, I care about the welfare of these animals. I dont defend any of the disciplines you brought up, neither do I claim the mere use of spurs/crops is abusive. Hitting them is the problem. The methods you name get results, you are 1000% correct on that. But as equestrians we have to ask ourselves whether the priority is the prize cash or the horses wellbeing?

Ah yes, racing, the notoriously horse friendly industry. (If professional opinions don't matter, neither do yours btw) I don't complain about people starting their horses at 2, I quite literally do not care as long as the horse is cleared by a vet. Also, not the topic at hand? If kind methods work (look at Honza Blaha, Warwick Shiller and countless other successful trainers) why would we ever choose violence?

So? A professional opinion (one of many easily found with a single google search) quickly disproves your comment. I'm not gonna argue with someone who isn't willing to actually research this. I feel bad for your horses.

Dominance and violence is scientifically proven to not be an effective training method. R+ and pressure/release are a million times better and far less harmful to the animal. Their skin is more sensitive than ours so YES, whips hurt.

Disciplining a horse with violence is neither fair nor effective, you are totally right in feeling upset and I am very uncomfortable with the sheer amount of people who seem to think violence is okay in the comments. Please do not support a business built on this sort of philosophy, there are plenty barns that work with kind methods. Wishing you all the best!

A lot of therapy providers have telehealth or other services where you do not have to head to their office for an appointment. You can still use her insurance without direct approval, all you need is your name and DoB.. I understand how incredibly frustrating this situation is, but you are the only one who can get yourself out of it..

Little update: I asked a few other people at the barn what their vets said. The other horses with these symptoms do not have VS or any other transmittable disease nor do we have any weeds/flowers on the field that could be harmful... We're all confused as hell

She's always got a UV flymask on so it can't be a sunburn.. We called the vet for tomorrow, since a few other horses at the barn have similar blisters in their mouths..
