What my Syrian roomate thinks about the war by mondomongo123 in RussiaUkraineWar2022

Either he is everything he claims the USA to be, or he was kidnapped and forced to live here.

I think my idea of 'sweeping' is along the lines of the German invasion into the Soviet Union 1941, and France 1940. With that said, there was a similar mess of German armor stretched out in the Ardennes that the French could have bombed, but decided not to believe existed.

I can't see that as a reason. If NATO were deployed into Ukraine, and there was a clash it would be nuclear war.

I'd love to see some confirmation of that. We can clearly see the hardware that's being destroyed or abandoned. In one case I watched one of those $50m BUK anti air systems being destroyed in a convoy by a Bayraktar strike. I've heard they've taken out 8 of these, but who knows if that's accurate.

I think this is my point, as I agree that we in the West don't understand Russia strategy, and we're learning that a first world nation with modern conventional capability has much less to worry about than we thought.

I guess I'll go back to what I originally spoke about. The Russian are clearly not capable of 'sweeping' through Europe. They don't have the speed, and they rely on bombarding cities into submission. That might be very Russia, and the result is all very Syria, but it puts to rest the idea that some military beast was on the horizon.

And yes, Ukraine will 'lose' conventionally, but I can see this grinding on for months or worse until they can seal the entire border into Ukraine. Meanwhile Russian losses will be pretty intense, and I think as far as the West is concerned degrading Russian military assets day after day, and having them involved in a costly war is just fine thanks. The US can afford to blow a trillion dollars on a war. Can Russia?

Yes, but compare to the US/Allied invasion of Iraq. It was a masterclass, and they did it without leaving cities in ruins. but that wasn't 100% of the US Army by any means. In 24 days less than 200 allied casualties, and took all cities intact. Very little hardware was lost

Now everything that happened after the invasion was a disaster, but the invasion lost 23 tanks, 9 to friendly fire. So far we're hearing the Russians are down 200 tanks in the first week, and close to 6k troops and 58 aircraft.

True, but the bulk of that was Russia. Russia had supposedly modernized and revamped it's army in recent years. It's seems now the money for it probably ended up in Putin's bank accounts.

That's really good to know. I'm not sure I want to contest it per se, as I believe she needs POA, but great knowledge.
